DAVID STUART GARDINER It is with heavy hearts that we announce David Stuart Gardiner's peaceful passing, at the age of 64 years, at St. Boniface Hospital on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. David was predeceased by his beloved parents, Wilfred and Mary Gardiner. Besides his loving wife Elaine, he is survived by his two daughters, Heather and Laura, his three brothers, Colin (Kathryn), Bob (Patricia), and Gordon, and his niece Robin (Elaine). David was born in Winnipeg in 1950 and attended school at Assiniboine and Grosvenor Elementary Schools, St. John's Cathedral Boys School, River Heights Junior High School and Kelvin High School. He married Elaine Winslow in 1984, and they had two daughters; the first was in 1987 and the second in 1988. He worked at the Canadian National Railway (CNR) for 30 years, retiring in 2006. David's first interest was always his family. He was very proud of his two girls. He loved fishing, hunting, nature, and wildlife, and never missed an opportunity to spend time outdoors. David loved the cottage, which has been in his family for three generations. His daughters spent many happy hours there during their summer holidays, often accompanied by their friends. David's love for fishing was unparalleled. He belonged to a few fishing clubs, and attended fishing derbies on a regular basis. His two daughters often joined him on these excursions. David would also stand out in the water in front of the cottage for hours, eagerly awaiting that big catch, which more often than not, he got. He even enjoyed teaching the neighbours' children how to fish. Boating and canoeing were also favourite activities. David loved gardening, and especially loved his yellow roses and other wildflowers. His garden would include cherry tomatoes, carrots, and pumpkins, which his family would carve at Halloween. David loved the holidays, and was especially fond of Christmas, when he would work tirelessly putting up the Christmas lights and other decorations. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to the staff at Riverview Health Centre and St. Boniface Hospital, for their efforts and compassion during David's stay. David is now at peace. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 9, at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. (across from Brookside Cemetery). Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0V9 or to Prostate Cancer Canada, 2 Lombard St., Toronto, M5C 1M1. Thoughts and prayers are with you Elaine, Heather and Laura. I remember Dave for his love of family, kindness, sense of humour, smile and his love of nature and the outdoors. He will be missed, but not forgotten and will live forever in the hearts of those who loved him and whose lives were touched by him. When our family would visit the Rose's at Whytewold, David would sometimes take me fishing at the Breakwater. We'd spend hours just sitting there with our fishing poles in the water. He would bait my hook and handle anything icky. He was quiet and I enjoyed his company. I'm so sorry that he has passed away, and offer my sincerest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Joyce Hubble () on: Oct 07, 2014

I remember David so well from our visits to Uncle Jack and Aunty Marjorie's cottage. We swam, played, fished, were ambushed on the long walk down the path to the cottage, usually by Colin and Al, and were kept laughing by Bobby's antics. When we were all played out, we would sit staring out onto the lake, listening to the waves lapping against the rocks. David, being the gentle, sensitive person that he was, probably liked that the best. He is part of some of my happiest memories and I am sad to know he is no longer with us. - Posted by: Marion Dick (nee Hubble) (Extended family member) on: Oct 07, 2014

I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to all of David's family on behalf of the Hubbles, originally from Winnipeg. We spent many a summer out at Matlock when we were young and often went to visit Uncle Jack (Rose) and Aunt Marjorie, next door to the Gardiner cottage. I clearly remember seeing David standing and staring out at the lake on many occasions. He also shared his knowledge of fishing and boating with me. All the memories I/we have of him are fond ones and I am sure he will be dearly missed by everyone that knew him. - Posted by: Cathy Enns (nee Hubble) (Extended family member) on: Oct 07, 2014

I have known Dave for about 24 years. His daughter Laura was friends with my son, Chris. I will always remember going over to the house and seeing his boat, camping gear, & fishing equipment around. Laura and Heather were very used to going to the lake and would share with me many of the wonderful things their father did with them. Fishing, swimming, picking berries. Its no wonder Laura is such an outdoors person. He showed them caring, patience, and love. I am happy to have known him. He will be missed. - Posted by: Barbara Walker (friend) on: Oct 04, 2014
