Born: Apr 07, 1941
Date of Passing: Oct 04, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD ARNI FLATT On October 4, 2014, at the St. Boniface Hospital, Donald Arni Flatt passed away peacefully, after a prolonged struggle with cancer. Don will be deeply mourned by his daughters and sons-in-law, Allison and Peter Bruckshaw, Miranda and Vern Winn, and his beloved grandchildren, Jon, Lilja, and Elinor Bruckshaw, who brought him great joy. He will also be mourned by his dear friend and travelling companion, Yvette Vincent. Don was born on April 7, 1941, and was a lifelong St. Vital resident. He grew up on Morier Avenue with his mother, Olive, and his brother, David. He attended Glenwood and Nordale Schools before receiving a scholarship to St. John's Ravenscourt. In his youth, Don spent two summers as an officer cadet with the Royal Canadian Navy before enrolling in university. After three false starts, he found his vocation and went on to receive four degrees: a B.A., a B.Ed., a M.A. (in English), and an L.L.B. from the University of Manitoba. Don began his teaching career at Lavallee School before moving onto Nelson MacIntyre as a grade 11 and 12 English teacher. He was elected president of the Norwood Teachers' Association and, with his team, negotiated the first maternity leaves for teachers in Manitoba. Looking for a new challenge, Don enrolled in law school in his mid-30s with the support of his former wife, Vaughn. He began his practice with Erickson and Clay before becoming a sole practitioner with offices on Osborne Street. He last practised in his home, where he met with clients at the dining room table until shortly before his death. He maintained a positive attitude until the very end, choosing to ignore conventional expectations, and travelling extensively throughout North America and Europe after his diagnosis. We will remember him sitting on the veranda or around the fireplace, telling stories about his adventures. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11, at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau St. N. at 10:00 a.m. Friends may wish to send donations to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or to send clothes and books to Value Village in support of diabetes research and treasure hunters. Special thanks to Dr. Chris Ogaranko, the staff of St. Boniface 7W, his home care workers, and the Palliative Care nurses. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

I miss Don and the idea of him sitting by the fire, telling stories. Don and I were married for 22 years and raised two beautiful successful women. Although we have been apart for many years, we remained good friends....sharing a lunch and laughs whenever I came to Winnipeg. Don was one of a kind and will held in our hearts forever! - Posted by: Vaughn (Friend) on: Oct 17, 2015

Don was one of the unforgettable men I met in my naval career. He had an intelligent, penetrating wit that endeared him to all he knew. It has been many years since I have seen Don, (1975 reunion, Victoria) but he will always be in my memory of a grand time in our lives. - Posted by: Bill Frost (Fellow Untd) on: Jan 19, 2015

Good-bye Don, from your oldest friend and his wife Christine. The legacy of your efforts on our family's behalf last year will always remain and though we will miss you terribly, we'll be forever grateful in our remembrance of you. And we'll certainly miss also those yearly Birthday parties you arranged for Les, just days before Christmas, when we all gathered round for a feast of "Flatt's Famous Ribs" and traded silly stories and lots of laughs. Rest in Peace, old friend. - Posted by: Les and Chris Crosthwaite (Friends) on: Oct 23, 2014

Donald was an easy guy to know and a pleasure doing buisness with him. It will be hard to replace him. - Posted by: Querel Trailers (Buisness) on: Oct 21, 2014

Don combined a scholarly demeanor around the dinner table and fireplace regarding the lessons of medieval English and the finer social aspects of his legal practice with an element of adventure. From swimming across the Red River, (strictly forbidden), to streaking to Grand Beach in the Silver Hawk at times taking to the ditch. He enriched a lot of lives!! - Posted by: John Graffin (Friend) on: Oct 14, 2014

Don was alive to everything and everything was a part of him, from his river to his piles of books, to his intellectual curiosity, to his family and all his friends. An evening with him was a gentle stroll through the wonders of life. - Posted by: Doug Turner (Friend) on: Oct 13, 2014

I have very clear memories of Mr. Flatt teaching our English class - when we students were slow to focus at the start of a class, he would start quoting 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' in middle English, which always got our attention. He was an excellent teacher and I always enjoyed his classes. He was clearly doing something he enjoyed, My condolences to family and friends. - Posted by: Paul Smith (Student at Nelson MacIntyre) on: Oct 11, 2014

I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Don. He was my school teacher and loved him as a teacher. Later in life I used him as my lawyer and he was so gentle and polite - especially as a lawyer! My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Ruth Bezys (Student/client) on: Oct 10, 2014

We are deeply saddened by the news of Uncle Don’s passing. On behalf of the Stewart family, please accept our heartfelt condolences. Don Flatt was a great lifelong friend of my father, Burt Stewart. They met in high school, and shared a strong friendship with lots of laughter. They experienced many great adventures that included hunting, sailing, and travel…their stories were endless and often unbelievable. Uncle Don was also my Godfather. He provided me with unconditional guidance, advice and support. Uncle Don was a very special person to us and we will miss him greatly. - Posted by: Cameron Stewart (Friend / Godson) on: Oct 08, 2014

I met Don about 25 years ago when I became his legal assistant when he had his office on Osborne. We moved his practice to his wonderful old house on the River where we worked, where he grew his geraniums for his gardens, where he made quirky lunches every day, where we visited his mother Olive next door. He adopted Goldie (a stray I had found) and gave her a wonderful life walking daily through the golf course collecting stray balls. They kept each other company. He was a good friend and I will dearly miss him. Condolences to his family and rest in peace Don. - Posted by: Kathy Bouchard (Legal Assistant/Friend) on: Oct 07, 2014

I am deeply sorry to learn of Don's passing. I offer my condolences to his family and his dear friend Yvette Vincent. We met in 1969 as officer naval cadets in the university naval training division. He from Winnipeg and I from Ottawa. We lost track of each other but resumed our acquaintance in the last few years as we exchanged Christmas greetings and caught up on our news. In 1969, Don, myself and another cadet took advantage of a long weekend to hitch hike to New York City and this bonded us from then on. He was then what he was since a man of unwavering principles. - Posted by: André Renaud (Friend) on: Oct 07, 2014
