Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMOGENS BALLE SVENDSEN (MORGAN) Mogens (Morgan) Balle Svendsen, 81, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Thursday, October 2, 2014, at Victoria Hospital, in Winnipeg, Manitoba after a courageous battle with cancer. Morgan was born in the Village of Aakirkeby on the island of Bornholm, Denmark on August 20, 1933. He grew up on a small farm as the oldest of six children, served with the Danish army and attended a school of agriculture prior to leaving behind his entire family and immigrating to Canada in April, 1959. He continued to work on several farms in Alberta and Saskatchewan until moving to Thompson, Manitoba in 1967 where he found work at the INCO Mining Company as a millwright. While living in Thompson, Morgan became deeply rooted within the community becoming president of the Steelworkers Union (Local 6166) in 1982, serving a term as director of the Nickel Board, becoming a school board trustee for nine years and serving on the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba. Morgan retired from INCO in 1998, and moved to Winnipeg in 2002. Morgan was always a hard worker and believed in the value of putting in your time and doing things right no matter the circumstances. Over the years, Morgan made many lifelong friends as he seemed to leave a lasting impression no matter where his travels took him. Morgan enjoyed his spare time in Thompson, spending countless hours fishing at Paint Lake and Mid Lake along with tending to his vegetable garden and flowers. He had a full appreciation for nature and showed this in the way that he lived. Even into retirement, Morgan continued gardening both at home and at his community garden plot. He remained active up until his final year through curling, lawn bowling, playing cribbage, volunteering with the Royal Canadian Legion, going to the "Y" to exercise, attending football games, making wine and visiting all of his family and friends. He will be missed dearly. Morgan was predeceased by his parents, Aage and Astrid, sister Inger Pedersen and brother Jorgen Balle-Svendsen. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 39 years, Martha; sons Erik (Aurora) and Leif (Keri); grandchildren Henry, Sofia, Jaya, Kelsey, Bo and Layne; sisters Kirsten Wattne (Ole) and Gunver Dahl-Kofoed (Keld), brother Leif Balle-Svendsen (Kis); brother-in-law Albert Geurts, sisters-in-law Marceline Lapointe, Mary Nault and Mary Geurts along with numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 8 at the Joy Lutheran Church located at 50 Barnes Street (beside the Bison Drive Superstore) at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Joy Lutheran Church Malawi Project or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, R3C 9Z9. Morgan was a very dear friend of my parents (John and Margaret Keysers) of Plumas, Manitoba. They got to know each other years ago through the Guerts family. Morgan and Albert used to drive out to Plumas a couple of times each year to visit Mom and Dad when they still lived on the farm. Our mother Margaret passed away on March 23, 2013, and Morgan came out to see her the day before her passing to say goodbye. The last time I talked to Morgan was this spring and it makes me feel so sad to find out that within that short span of time, he himself got sick and passed away. When you first met Morgan you immediately knew that you were in the presence of a very special man. He was an honest, loyal and a trustworthy friend and even after our Mother's passing would call to ask how our Dad was doing. His caring nature always shone through and we can only hope that he knew we cared about him too. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Martha his wife and to his sons and their families. Your Dad was so very proud of all of you! Sincerely, Doug and Shirley Post (Keysers) - Posted by: Shirley Post (Friend) on: Nov 25, 2014

Morgan was such a fine person; so honest and so committed to honour. I remember the times we spoke about Erik and Leif as they made their ways through High School. He was such a stronger supporter of the worker and their inherent rights through the collective bargaining process. Teachers in Thompson always knew that Morgan was the voice of reason when he was a Board member; it was the bench mark that we respected. His contributions to union workers in Thompson are entrenched into the fabric of our lives today. - Posted by: Brian McCusker (Northerner) on: Oct 09, 2014

Our deepest condolences and sympathies go out to Morgan's family. We got to know Morgan through our attending Epiphany and then Joy Lutheran Churches. This was a man that always had a smile on his face and penchant for chatting in being open and friendly way with whomever was around him. Morgan was a gentleman and was always more interested in you talking about himself. He will always be remembered as the person who introduced our Men's Breakfast group to fish for breakfast as, when he volunteered to be a breakfast chef, Manitoba Goldeye would be on the menu. Rest in peace, my friend. - Posted by: Ronald Smith (Church Friend and Colleague) on: Oct 08, 2014

My sincere condolences to Martha and the family in the passing of Mogens. Janie and I met Mogens at an annual banquet of Federated Co-Operatives many years ago. Since then him and Martha would come out for a visit and a cup of coffee several times a year. At Christmas he would bring me a "Rulle Polse" which he made himself. It was delicious. He was also very supportive when Janie passed away. Farvel gamle ven og paa gensyn. Kai Winther old old Danish friend. - Posted by: Kai Winther (Old old friend from Dufresne) on: Oct 07, 2014

My Dad loved his company. I always enjoyed the surprise visits from him in the afternoons, he would also have time for a beer or two and a story to tell . Our thoughts and prayers go out to Morgan's family. We have fond memories and a great appreciation of Morgan from our life in Thompson, MB. During the first 6 months of our time in Thompson in the early 1980's, we lived in Martha and Morgan's house as other rental space was not easily available. We came to know Morgan and his family and developed close bonds with them throughout our 24 years in Thompson. They were warm and supportive during good as well as tough times, especially when I lost my spouse, and my parents. May God bless you all. - Posted by: Verna Stecy, Maurice Bernardin, Jason & Mel, & Natasha & Jason (Friends of Morgan, Martha, Erik and Leif) on: Oct 06, 2014

Deepest sympathies to the family of Morgan Svendsen, a true friend, knowledgeable conversationalist, family oriented, hard working, jovial and pleasant person we knew and loved. His autobiography will be cherished as a great memento in our home which he has been a guest many times. We truly will miss his frequent phone calls. May he rest in peace. Sorry we never got to meet his sons too, but heard how proud he was of them. - Posted by: Deanna & Dwayne Radmacher, Edenwold, Sask. (Good friends) on: Oct 06, 2014

Morgan was a fantastic neighbour, always willing to help. While I was house-sitting my father's house for a year when he was away traveling, Morgan was always sure to drop by for a cup of tea and to have a chat. I knew he was checking in on me to make sure I was ok. I enjoyed our chats and appreciated his concern. My deepest sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Maire McDermott (Friend) on: Oct 06, 2014
