RUTH ELIZABETH NEWTON Ruth Elizabeth Newton (nee Holditch), May 26, 1934 October 6, 2014, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away suddenly at the age of 80. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Albert (Al) Newton of Winnipeg, Manitoba and parents George and Marjorie Holditch of Windsor, Ontario. Ruth is survived and will be sorrowfully missed by her son David, daughter-in-law Gaylene and granddaughter Kaitlyn; daughter Catharine, son-in-law Edward and grandsons Brandon and Austin of Calgary; son Tim, daughter-in-law Charlene; son Paul and daughter-in-law Rachel of Vancouver; sister Joan and brother-in-law Bill of Oldcastle, Ontario. Ruth grew up in Windsor, Ontario and followed her passion for teaching young children as an elementary school teacher before marrying Al in 1959. After the birth of their first child, (David), the small family transferred to Regina, SK through Al's work. Three additional children later, (Catharine, Tim and Paul) the now big family moved to Winnipeg and have made it their home since 1969. Ruth was blessed with many, many good friends who will remember her as someone who always had a kind word to say, the first to offer help, and would roll up her sleeves to get the job done. She will be truly cherished for her extraordinary kind heart and generous spirit. Ruth found profound fulfillment and gratification through her many years of tireless charity, volunteer and public service pursuits. She enjoyed her years with the CNIB, fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and as Commissioner for Elections Canada over the years. Ruth felt a special bond with her friends in the Khartum Ladies' Auxiliary, Fez Bowling and the Daughters of the Nile where she loved every minute being in her patrol. Ruth found tremendous comfort and guidance in her faith, over the years, being an active member of St. Andrew's Anglican Church. If we define someone by the friends they keep, then the profound and long lasting relationships built with the members of the St. Andrew's parish are beyond words and written sentiment. But her most precious love was her family of whom she was so proud. Love and devotion to her family always came first. Ruth's family wish to express their thanks to all of the friends and family who have shown such kindness and support in this trying time. A memorial service celebrating Ruth's life will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 in St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue, R3J 0R1 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Andrew's Anglican Church. • So sorry to hear of cousin Ruth's sudden and untimely death. Although we did not see each other often, living most of our lives far apart, we always enjoyed each other's company and had some good laughs. Ruth had such an engaging smile and infectious laugh and alway struck me as a warm and caring person. • I was shocked and feel a great loss with Ruth's passing. We spent many, many hours working on the Supreme Session when it was held in Winnipeg in 2002 and this formed a wonderful friendship. Also, had a great week at the lake making kilts. Ruth seemed to be enjoying herself so much - I will dearly miss her, as will the whole family. My most sincere condolences to out to you. • Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family during this time of loss. We were so shocked to hear of Ruth's passing as we had just talked and laughed at the Fashion Show. Ruth always made sure everyone around her felt so special and would go out of her way to make sure none of her friends were in any sorrow or distress. Ruth no longer holds a place on earth but she will always hold a special place in our hearts and her memory will live on forever, especially for her family and friends. Through the tears there will be joy found at the end of the rainbow and Ruth memories will be a true pot of gold. I know that she will be gathering everyone in heaven to ensure they all keep in step as she will be greatly missed as part of the Patrol. Our sympathy and love go to her family. Ruth, your smile and kind words will be greatly missed. Nile Love, Judy and Hazel Bosko - Posted by: Judy Bosko McCarthy and Hazel Bosko (Fellow Daughters of the Nile) on: Oct 14, 2014
