HERBERT ABRAHAMS On Tuesday, October 7, 2014, peacefully and with great courage Herb gained freedom from his battle with cancer at the age of 77. He was the youngest of 10 children, born June 11, 1937 to Rev. David and Katherina Abrahams in Pigeon Lake, MB. Remaining to cherish Herb's memory are his loving wife and soul mate of 55 years, Rita (nee Dyck), son Kevin (Robyn, Paul, Blair), daughter Janice Land (Patrick, Andrew, Tristan) and son Eric (Alex), three sisters, one brother, extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents and five brothers. Herb became a journeyman electrician at the age of 22 and continued in the trade all his life. He enjoyed travelling and made trips through Canada and the US, Hawaii, Jamaica, Alaska and parts of Europe. He played hockey and later curled, but his greatest involvement was with Ringette. He was instrumental in forming Ringette Canada and assisted in writing the first rule book. He served as Referee-in-chief on the national level for five years. In 2000 Herb and Rita moved to West Hawk Lake and they became very involved in the community. He was proud of being part of the South East Whiteshell Fire Department. He qualified as a volunteer fire fighter at age 68! Herb believed in community where ever he lived. Herb's strength and joy was in being with people. All the visitors and the words of comfort and encouragement at the hospital were so important to him. Also thank you to the staff at Ste. Anne's Hospital for their wonderful care during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ste. Anne's Hospital Foundation or the West Hawk United Church. There will be two services: at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., and at Falcon Lake Community Centre on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Please let me extend my sincerest regrets to Rita, Kevin and the rest of the Abrahams family at learning of the passing of their beloved patriarch and my dear friend Mr. Abrahams. Herb had all the old-school attributes which sometimes appear to be in short supply these days. He was fair, decent, hard-working, generous, patient, honest, dependable, humble, highly-skilled and loved to laugh. It has been said that character is what one does when nobody is watching. Herb had character in spades. And you always knew that he could be relied on to do the right and decent thing whether he had an audience or not. Moreover, the sign that greeted one above his home doorway said it all... "come on in, everything else has gone wrong!" That sign spoke not to any negativity - because Herb was incredibly upbeat and positive - but it implied that a visitor needed to have a measure of both humility and humor if one were to get the most out of your visit. And I am sure most everyone did. Thanks for all the treasured memories Mr. Abes... you were a great example of how one should live a life and one helluva friend. I am going to miss - but never forget - you and your genuinely heartwarming smile. Godspeed. Yogi <3 - Posted by: Yogi Henderson (Friend of Family) on: Oct 18, 2014

We will remember Herb as one of the most popular referees for the Ladies League. He was fair to all of us and we could always count on him for a good laugh. Even when the laugh was on him doing skits at the year end banquet. He was a good man who will be missed. Our condolences to Rita and Family - Posted by: Joan & Ken Einarson (Ringette Friends) on: Oct 14, 2014

Kevin was a keen student of mine at University of Winnipeg. Then I met Herb when we bought a cottage at West Hawk Lake. We needed some electrical work done, & we met a very special man. Highly professional, caring, conscientious... His commitment to the volunteer Fire Department epitomized his dedication to the community. This man was ALWAYS a treat to run into--his beaming smile, gracious nature, his warmth, & his strong values will long be remembered. We will miss you immensely, Herb. But we know you are deserving of the very best place in eternity. Thanks for all you gave us... - Posted by: Cal & Doreen Botterill (Friend) on: Oct 11, 2014

Herb was a man of honesty, integrity and fairness. You could easily share a laugh and some good conversation over a glass of beer or a coffee. It is hard to believe he won't be coming home to West Hawk. To Rita - there was always a spark of love when I saw you two together - and your family, I send my most heartfelt condolences. He will be sadly missed by any of us who knew him and the community at large. God bless. - Posted by: Darrell Kinley (work associate and friend) on: Oct 11, 2014
