BARBARA HELEN STRASZYNSKI (née KRUCZYNSKI) March 8, 1937 October 11, 2014 Barbara passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 77 with family at her side, after a long battle with cancer. Left to cherish her memory is her husband Adam, daughter Elizabeth (Chris Wilson), son Paul, brother Leonard (Doreen Smith), numerous cousins, other extended family and many friends. Barbara will be remembered for her devoted, kind and loving nature, sense of humour and strong faith. She gave generously of her time and herself, and touched many lives. Born and raised in Winnipeg, she attended St. Mary's Academy and earned a B.A., M.A., and B.Ed. from the University of Manitoba. She had a love of travel, history, and culture, and travelled extensively through several continents with her family and in retirement with her husband Adam. Barbara taught kindergarten and grade one for many years, first in Winnipeg and later in Lowe Farm. She was a life-long volunteer at food banks, soup kitchens, and schools as a reading coach, and was active in the Catholic Women's League. She was a prodigious and highly skilled knitter, producing clothing and blankets for family and charities. She also gave generously to charities, especially World Vision Canada and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). A funeral mass will be held at Mary, Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Dr. Winnipeg, on Thursday, October 16 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall. The family would like to thank the staff at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre for their professionalism and high quality care during the last several months of her life. In lieu of flowers Barbara requested that donations be made to Médecins Sans Frontières, her favourite charity, 720 Spadina Avenue, Suite 402 Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 2T9. • It is with fondness that I remember Mrs. Straszynski. She was my Kindergarten teacher in Lowe Farm in 1984-85. Her kind but firm nature shone in her teaching skills involving singing, reading to us, teaching us to count numbers, print our names or supervising the school yard. My most enduring memory of her presence was her playing the upright piano while teaching us the Mickey Mouse song. What a joy to have known her! - Posted by: Jeanette Mockford (née Dueck) (former student) on: Oct 16, 2014
