AUDREY ELEANORE COOKE (NORRIS)
Born: May 30, 1915
Date of Passing: Oct 28, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAUDREY ELEANORE COOKE (nee NORRIS) May 30, 1915 - October 28, 2014 Peacefully on October 28, 2014, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Audrey Cooke passed away at the age of 99. Audrey, known as Nanny to her family, is survived by her daughter Joan Anstruther, her son Ron Cooke (Chris), her daughter Gale Williamson, her daughter Diane King, nine grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur, and sons-in-law Alex Anstruther, Ken Williamson and Ron King. Nanny was born and raised on a farm near Napinka, Manitoba. She left for Winnipeg as a young woman where she met and married Arthur and raised a family in the west end. Nanny was not one to be idle; and as the family grew up, Nanny went to work. She spent a number of years working at Hallmark Cards in Polo Park and then at Grandma Lee's Bakery on Sherbrook. Nanny loved spending time with family and many Sunday afternoons were spent visiting, and she always showed up with some kind of treat - red velvet cake, rosebuds, or snow balls. On special occasions, it may even be a homemade flapper or banana cream pie. Christmas was always a special time as we all made the trip to Nanny's to sort through and pick a box of Christmas cards, and leave with a tin of her shortbread cookies. Even still, no one makes shortbread like Nanny did. Nanny was active and fit all of her life - well into her 80s. She walked daily, setting a great example for the rest of us. She travelled often to visit family in Minneapolis and Toronto or for vacations to Hawaii and the Caribbean. A special thank you to all of the wonderful staff on the 5th floor Supportive Housing at the Lion's Manor for the wonderful care given to Nanny. An extra special thank you to Nina who was there with Nanny for many years. We always rested easy knowing she was cared for well. Thank you also to the caring staff at the Grace Hospital for making Nanny comfortable on her last days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4G2. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg at 11:00 a.m. A private interment will take place at a later date. I am sorry to hear of Mrs. Cooke's passing and offer my sincere condolences to you all. It was always a pleasure for me to drop in and talk to your parents in the warm front porch on William Avenue. Your Mom and Dad were always so welcoming and interested in what I was doing. Your mom had a long, generous life and left children she must have been proud of and been very happy to share your lives. She would have enjoyed all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. rm - Posted by: Rose Marie McLean (Butler) (Old friend of the family) on: Oct 31, 2014
