Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALAN A. MUIR October 15, 1928 October 22, 2014 It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Alan Muir, our much beloved father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. "Grandpa Al" was a contented soul. He had practical wisdom, and a liking for people. He was always there to have a visit or just listen, and to his final hours never lost his gift of humour. He was an extremely quick and funny man, who would surprise you with a laugh. Alan was an avid reader, always up on local, world events and sports. Alan spent most of his career in the insurance industry as an insurance adjuster. He would often travel in his car to visit properties damaged by fire, weather, flooding, etc. He had a reputation as a straight forward, honest man that tried his best to do right by people. He was a great husband and father. Alan was shown early to be a gifted athlete, playing all sports, and was a very strong swimmer back in a time when Fort Rouge kids used to be able to swim in the Red River. He would go on to be an avid curler, playing in bonspiels all over the prairies when he was young and then played as a member for years at the Heather and St. Vital Curling Clubs. Alan was also an excellent golfer, sometimes winning tournaments and bringing home trophies and prizes. He also enjoyed music, and sang with local barber shopper' groups. Because of his quick wit and speaking ability he was called upon numerous times to MC at events, including the yearly Sweet Adeline concerts. Alan and Shirley spent many glorious summers at their cabin at Sandy Hook. There they would surround themselves with family, friends, music, and lots of fun and humor, especially when their dear friends, Ab and Joyce Forth were around. Alan was predeceased by his father Alexander Muir, his mother Lavinia, and sister Betty. He leaves behind his wife Shirley, daughter Marylou (Bernie) and sons Robert (Laurie) and Jamie, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We would like to thank those at the Victoria Hospital, 4th floor that gave Dad loving care and did a wonderful job of keeping him comfortable and looked after. A celebration of Alan's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1 at the Seine River Retirement Residence, 1015 St. Anne's Road, in the Chapel on the third floor. Due to limited visitor parking available at the Seine, the Dr. Raj Pandey Hindu Centre, 999 St. Anne's Road, immediately next door, has kindly allowed us to use their parking for this occasion. Many people who were fortunate to have known Al will remember so many things. His sense of humour made us laugh and listening to him singing made us smile. Always with a grin to make you feel welcome. There were many good times had with visiting him and Shirley. Those happy times are too numerous to mention. Sadly, I will not have a chance to beat Al in cribbage as I never could win a game. He was so proud with always winning. Al loved to tell me about his career as an Insurance Adjuster and I enjoyed all of the stories. His was always smiling and willing to help if you needed any help. Entertain those angels. My "Uncle" Al as I always called him was the funniest, kindest man I ever knew. The earlier comment that he would say "6" or "8" when asked what number he could be reached at is a perfect example of of his unique sense of humour. I was so glad to be be able to have a visit with him and Aunt Shirley this summer at their lovely retirement home - he was exactly the same as I remembered him from years ago at Sandy Hook - kind, understated and hilarious. Even the woman at the front desk said "Mr Muir you are a very funny man"......and his eyes just twinkled. Love to all the family and prayers for each of you. Al will be remembered fondly forever. - Posted by: Sharon Forth Abel (family friend) on: Nov 04, 2014

I got to know Al through many years of Barbershop singing, curling at Valour Road CC, golf at Sandy Hook, and at many barbershop socials. We all benefited from his great sense of humour and his knowledge. My condolences to Shirley and the family. - Posted by: Vern Fast (Barbershop singing friend) on: Nov 01, 2014

It was such a pleasure visiting Al and Shirley as one of their care givers this past year. They were such a beautiful couple with so much love for each other. I am very saddened by the news of Al's passing, my thoughts are with the family during this hard time. A good man. Competent and a joy to associate with him during his P.J.Scott days. Al's personality was special and infectious and I am grateful our paths crossed. - Posted by: Garry Harland (Friend) on: Oct 30, 2014

Al was a very nice guy and always had a funny word to say. Before cell phones, when he was asked what number he could be reached at when he left the office, he'd say "6" or maybe "8". Condolences to Shirley and the family. - Posted by: Ron Henderson (Al and I worked together at P. J. Scott) on: Oct 30, 2014
