DR. THOMAS (TED) EDWARD CUDDY On Tuesday, November 4, 2014 Dr. Thomas Edward "Ted" Cuddy passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness. Ted was predeceased by his parents, Alfred Loftus and Dorothy Ada Cuddy, his brother Keith and his sister Elaine. He is remembered with love by his wife Margaret, his son Edward (Libby), daughter Alison, son Jonathan, daughter Ann (Blair), and grandchildren Jessica, Declan and Campbell Rose. He is also survived by his first wife Beverly Rose McNamara. Ted was born June 10, 1930 at the old Grace Hospital in Winnipeg and raised in Sanford, Manitoba. His greatest feature was his wide and enthusiastic smile, matched only by his ribald sense of humour. Ted took an interest in everything and everyone, and proved an enthusiastic, supportive friend. He had an incredible zest for life, and loved to chat with people from all walks of life and learn their stories. That said, he never minced words or suffered a fool. Ted graduated from the University of Manitoba as a M.D. in 1954, after interning at Winnipeg General Hospital for three years. He was a brilliant student, and in his final year won the Chown Medal in Medicine, representing the highest standing in Internal Medicine. He was Chief Resident at Winnipeg General Hospital in 1956-1957. During this time he received the Research Prize in Physiology for work performed with Dr. Joe Doupe, now famed for his innovative approach to Medical Science. He went on to hold long-term faculty positions as Professor of Medicine and Head of the Section of Cardiology. His leadership positions at Health Sciences Centre included Head of Cardiology from 1962 to 1984, Director of the Electrocardiography Department for 34 years and the Holter Laboratory for 24 years. Medical fellowships took him to Oklahoma, Stockholm and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He became Professor Emeritus and Senior Scholar at the University of Manitoba in 2000. Colleagues hailed Ted for establishing Manitoba's reputation for leading-edge cardiovascular research. He was involved in many of the first clinical trials in the early days of permanent pacemaker insertion and helped develop the Health Sciences Centre Intensive Care Unit during his 13 years as Associate Director. But if you asked Ted, he'd say his greatest accomplishment as a physician was as Director of the Manitoba Follow-up Study, one of the world's largest and longest-running investigations of cardiovascular disease. His passion for the Follow-up Study led him to involve many family and friends in the work. He was named Director Emeritus in 2001 and published and presented extensively on the Study's research. Throughout his career, Ted continued to give back to his profession, including establishing a research award for medical students. Outside of work, Ted combined a jack-of-all-trades ability with the voracious intellect of a Renaissance man. He was a gifted amateur photographer, especially of nature scenes and family gatherings. He cared deeply for his gardens. He loved music, particularly classical and jazz, an interest he passed on to all of his children. He was an aviation enthusiast and frequented air shows across the province. He enjoyed discovering small, out-of-the-way restaurants and sharing these finds with family and friends. Ted was an all-round athlete who excelled at outdoor activities. He loved to swim, ski (downhill, cross-country and water!), hike, play hockey, cycle and canoe. He traveled the world but always said there was no place as beautiful as Lake of the Woods. He took great joy in family journeys, whether renting a cargo van for an epic ski trip to Lake Louise and Banff, or heading to the cottage, at West Hawk Lake, Lake of the Woods, and more recently, Gimli. Ted was a true hometown booster, and avidly supported many local sports, cultural, community and church organizations. Ted's family extends heartfelt thanks to the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care Team for their incredible care and kindness, especially Mary Ashcroft, his nurse Lana, and caregivers Brooke, Kamil, Mary Ann and Christine. Thanks also to Nucci the cat, Ted's constant companion over the last six months. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Avenue at Maryland Street. Flowers gratefully declined. Those who wish to remember Ted are encouraged to support the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, or Westminster United Church. Condolences & Memories (33 entries)

  • Dear Margaret and family: Because of your husband, we were able to have our mom with us for another 30 years. In the early sixties, my mom had open heart surgery at the HSC, which at that time was ground-breaking. Dr. Cuddy and his entire team essentially performed miracles. We were Italian immigrants living in Fort Frances, Ontario, and I remember how kind and understanding Dr. Cuddy and his colleagues were to my dad who did not speak English well at that time. My mom lived through that first surgery when really, she should not have. The ground-breaking techniques and treatment of my mom then, are what today, might be characterized as routine today. Although I was a young boy at that time, I remember, as do my older brothers, how committed he was to do everything possible to ensure my mom lived. Later on, my mom went on to have two additional successful open-heart surgeries. I was witness to the incredible advancements in treatment and techniques. Recently, I have spoken about my mom and her health experiences. When I have mentioned Dr. Cuddy and the cardiology team to internists and other medical professionals in Ottawa and Toronto, they said; “you know that you are talking about the pioneers in cardiology.” While I write this six years after his passing, I wanted to let you and your family know that our family will never forget the gift of life your husband (Ted) gave to our mom and to our entire family. Because of him, while I wanted to go into medicine, life took me in a different direction. Today, I am an advocate for Canada’s public healthcare system, and for seniors. I often referred to Dr. Cuddy as my inspiration to do so. Thank you for allowing me to write this on behalf of our family. • I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity of working with the Cardiologists and special staff on F3 Cardiology in the '70s. They were a dream team of specialists then; Corbett, Hossien, Rabkin, Thrifts, Rabson and Department Head Ted Cuddy. Ted was a warm friendly and bubbly person who saw something in me back then. I am forever grateful to Ted for lighting the fire in me for the Cardiac Sciences. I saw Ted a few times over the decades, usually at some airport, but he was always keen to hear how my life was unfolding. I was surprised but honoured to see Ted at my Dad's funeral as his sister, I believe, was friends with my Dad and Mom, who knew! I have a diploma above my desk which I cherish dearly, it was signed by Dr.Ted Cuddy. "My song will sit in the pupils of your eyes and will carry your sight into the heart of things" Rabindranath Tagore Thank you Ted. Deepest sympathy to family and friends! • Ted was the guy who inspired me in Cardiology to ask why and go out and find answers. When choosing a career, nothing inspires you like a guy in his 50s who walks up 5 flights of stairs and can't wait to get to work. He was THE guy I wanted to be like as a resident. As a mentor, research supervisor and ultimately friend, the world was such a better place because of Ted. Marg, I thought of both of you often, even after leaving Winnipeg 20 years ago. - Posted by: Andrew Krahn (Friend and former Trainee) on: Nov 22, 2014

  • Ted Cuddy always seemed to have an endless enthusiasm for the many aspects of Cardiology whether it was in discussing recent advances in cardiology or in the act of caring for patients with heart disease. He had a keen insight into the impact of a patient's personality on their illness and how to ensure that the appropriate and best care was delivered for that person. He was one of the builders of cardiology in Manitoba. We trust these memories will be an ongoing sense of pride for his family. - Posted by: Dr Simon W Rabkin (Former colleague) on: Nov 20, 2014

  • Dear Margaret and family, I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ted. It did offer me time to reflect on my experiences working with him at HSC in the CCU and ICU's. Ted taught me so much about being a professional through his sharing of knowledge and his empathy to his patients. He was the consummate role model for physicians and nurses alike. My love of ECG's was a direct result of his influence and his encouragement to teach. Thank you Ted. I will miss you. - Posted by: Peg Holt (Colleague and friend) on: Nov 17, 2014

  • My sincere condolences on the loss of your Dear Father, Dr. Ted Cuddy. My association with Jonathan was during his employment with Bristol Aerospace Ltd. (T&D Lab. Dept. 640) renamed M & P Eng. Dept.762. Father and Son are identical in facial features as well as their personalities and my working association from what I have read in the passage. I have known Jonathan for 20 years and considered him to be a caring person, dear friend. So sorry to hear of the loss of your Dear Dad but his dedication to his profession as well as all comments made by others are memories never forgotten as he touched so many people in his lifetime. Written ... Sincerely - Posted by: Irene Baumbach (Co-Worker & Friend of Son - Jonathan . ) on: Nov 10, 2014

  • Ann, I am truly so sorry for the loss of your dad. He sounds like a very special man. He had a full life; as a physician but also with his family and all the activities that he enjoyed. I know you are so proud to have been his daughter. My best to you and your family. Everyone at work sends their love. Love, Marcie Buford. - Posted by: Marcie Buford (Friend of Ann Cuddy ) on: Nov 09, 2014

  • It was very sad to hear of Ted's recent passing away. Ted and I have a long association, with both of us having grown up in Sanford (30's-40's) Between that time and more recently, we kind of lost touch, but joyfully re-established connections again in the 1990's and 2000's when we did some house swaps and just straight visits to each other, in Wpg. and Canberra - immensely enjoyed by both families. Ted and Marg have several friends here in Australia who send along their condolences, including Dr. and Mrs Ronald Reid, Gillian Ferguson and I am sure several others who are not so well known to me. Ted was a great guy and will be sorely missed by all of us. Brian McKay - Posted by: Brian A. McKay (Friend and school classmate in Sanford Consolidated school) on: Nov 09, 2014

  • Dear Margaret, So very saddened to hear of your Dear Ted's passing. I shall always remember his sincerity and enthusiasm for his work and his love of fun. The trip that you, Ted and I, along with Pat Courcelles, took in New Orleans to a specialty wine store, passing burned out homes and cars before turning into a building complete with armed guard at the door, had to be a highlight. The wine selection was remarkable! One of Dr. Cuddy's memorable finds. • As a new nurse to the ICU environment, Dr Cuddy was a treasure to work with. It was always a grand day when Dr Cuddy was Attending in CCU! Collaborative, wise, truly invested in his work, compassionate, and a consummate gentleman. Our paths went different ways, but the time of working TOGETHER as one team, have left a lasting impression. Offering deepest sympathies to Marg and family. - Posted by: Trish Bergal (Colleague) on: Nov 09, 2014

  • Our condolences to all of the Cuddy Families. All enjoyed the warmth and great smile of Ted. He was loved by all in family, work and play. We enjoyed his family history knowledge and zest for life. Thinking of mother-grandmother (Nanny) Tannis (Cuddy) Lester who spoke of him with pride. • Dear Marg, George and I are so very sorry to hear of Ted's passing. We had the greatest admiration for Ted's warm and friendly personality and respect for his knowledge and expertise. George was the recipient of Ted's gifted ability to make his patients feel comfortable and supported when he was a participant in the P.E.A.C.E. project - a support that he never forgot. We enjoyed your company and Ted's wonderful sense of humour when we were together at nursing functions and informal parties. Our deepest sympathy to you in your very sad loss. - Posted by: George and Sharon Tschikota (Friends) on: Nov 08, 2014

  • Ever since we were lucky enough to have Ted care for Colleen (my wife) whenever I see, hear, read the word 'Doctor'...I have thought of Ted! His 'caring and compassionate' ways...I truly believe, 'gifted' an additional 15 years to Colleen! I could write pages on our hospital visits, discussions, and yes sharing stories and laughter...with Ted! We were fortunate to have Ted within our lives! And his love for LIFE was first and foremost....which he seemingly was intent upon 'sharing' not just with his patients, but with their families...as well as all who worked with him! GOD BLESS YOU TED! From the entire Robertson Clan....Murphy Clan (Cal)...and all others that were lucky to see your smile! - Posted by: John Robertson (Husband to a former patient) on: Nov 08, 2014

  • All right, Alison. Even though I never knew your father, he explains you. Big love to you and your family. - Posted by: Nancy Watrous (friend of Alison, his daughter) on: Nov 08, 2014

  • My deepest condolences Marg, Nucci & family on hearing of Ted's death. I met fellow RN Marg when hired from Sydney, Australia by the then WGH in 1967, & 2 years later in SICU/RR met Dr Ted Cuddy, working with him more closely in the 1970's in H7's MICU. I returned to Oz permanently in 1989, subsequently experiencing the very real & fun-filled pleasures of having Ted & Marg stay with me & my wee dog Charlie on NSW's far South Coast, during which times the G&Ts w/a generous wedge of lime freely flowed as we reminisced about good Wpg times past plus shared updates of mutual friends. All such fun, 3 particular highlights being all 3 of us screaming @ the TV when Canada won Winter Olympic Hockey Gold, Ted's encounter w/a very large spider appearing in the bath tub beside him as he was shaving & enjoying a relaxed & laughing Ted, trousers rolled up, paddling in the crystal clear aquamarine ocean down @ Mystery Bay. So proud to have worked w/you Ted, more grateful to know you thereafter as a friend & lastly privileged that you & Marg graced Charlie & me with your company on your last trips "Down Under". - Posted by: Nanette ("Nan") Keeling (RN (Retired) & friend) on: Nov 07, 2014

  • Margaret and family. So very sad to hear of your loss. I worked with Dr Cuddy for many years in Cardiology at HSC. We spent many hours doing Cath & EP cases in the lab. I did see him a few years back at the congress in Quebec City where we had a delightful chat and caught up on news of family & friends. I always admired him and his patience & compassion for his patients and colleagues. Truly one of the great ones! Sincerest Condolences to you all. • Jonathan, we express our sincere sympathy to you and your family at this time of great loss. Reading his tribute made us realize that you are a great reflection of your dad. Dedicated to worthy causes, kind and compassionate to others, a wonderful dry sense of humour and the appreciation of Classical and Jazz music. Nice legacy. - Posted by: Brenda and Ric Jones (Former colleague of Jon) on: Nov 07, 2014

  • As a very young, Toronto trained, Red Lake GP who more than 30 years ago found herself having to care for patients who in the city would have had specialists attending them, having Dr Cuddy answer the phone was wonderful. He was always patient, helpful, careful and kind. Having him, a man of such stature, come to our small remote community allowed us to see his humility, benefit from his knowledge and work ethic and share his enthusiasm and humour. He clearly enjoyed meeting people and ensured they felt cared for - as patients, colleagues and friends. His expressed delight was contagious and kept him young. His goodness has touched and helped many many people; in that knowledge I trust there is both solace & inspiration. With condolences to all who will miss him - Posted by: Dr Diane Zielke (friend) on: Nov 06, 2014

  • Dear Margaret and family Ted was an excellent cardiologist, a good friend and a loyal colleague. We shall miss him. Patrick Choy - Posted by: Patrick Choy (Colleague, U of Manitoba) on: Nov 06, 2014

  • Dear Marg: So many great memories! Your cottage, our cottage, dinner at your place, dinner at our place . . . always good fun, great conversations, and interesting wines! My two favourite photos of our girls growing up were taken by Ted. Ted was though, to me (Diana), first and foremost, a very important mentor in my research career. I'll always remember our research meetings, brainstorming, drawing diagrams, planning studies, no idea too strange to work with. He was always supportive and encouraging and patient! I am honoured that he was willing to work with me. Our whole family will miss him. Rest in peace! and deepest condolences to you and the family. - Posted by: The Clarke family: Diana, Bruce, Melanie, and Megan (Friend and colleague) on: Nov 06, 2014

  • Dear Marg and family, we are so very, very sorry for your loss of such a wonderful man. Having you as our neighbours was just such a fantastic experience for Kevin, Hailey and me. Ted set the bar high with his generosity, humour and kindness. I see him now in my mind tending to his beautiful vegetable garden. We loved living next door to you and we miss the wonderful times we shared with you and Ted. Your family and friends will be of great strength and support to you during this difficult time. • A big thank you to Margaret for looking after Dr Cuddy during this difficult time. I will never forget his concern for my best interests and my health. He cared beyond and I depended on him for this. To his family a big thank you for the time spent at hospital when you could have had other plans. Sitting in emergency waiting for him to calm my fear of what was happening and was going to happen his voice always made me believe all would be okay?? From 1973 to 2000 trust me I have missed him and will forever. I believe he knew I trusted him with my life. I will remember so many quotes of his but the best was "one rose does not make a summer" weasel history together in 1974 with the first radio frequency transmitter but it was his imprint on my life and outlook that I say goodbye and thank God for his part on my life. I will cherish every memory good, bad, sad and happy! - Posted by: Loraine Stuart (Patient/friend) on: Nov 05, 2014

  • Endlessly patient with patients and students. - Posted by: Suzanne Ullyot (friend) on: Nov 05, 2014
