MARTIN HORVATH 1933 - 2014 Peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2014 in his residence, with loved ones at his side, Martin Horvath, age 81 years, of Steinbach, formerly of the Piney area left his earthly home. He leaves behind: his loving wife, Lois and their children: Gail Horvath (Neil Turner) of Selkirk, April (Shawn) Harder of Steinbach and Frank (Kim) Horvath of Marchand; three grandchildren: Leah, Aberdeen and McKade; sisters: Elsie (George) Listmayer of Sprague, Mary (John) Byman of Menisino, Martha Yankoski of Winnipeg, Tillie (George) Toker of Riviere Qui Barre, Alberta; brother Eddie (Gisele) Horvath of Buffalo Point; brother-in-law Stan (Ruby) Goodman of Piney, two maternal aunts, members of the Maus family along with many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Louis in 1988, mother Mary in 2004, sister Anne Jacob Lempen in 2000, and sister Rose Goodman in 2007. Martin was born on July 14, 1933 on the family farm near Menisino - the area where he spent his childhood and many of his working years. He loved the country life and was known as a very loyal and hard worker, dedicated husband, father, Nagypapa, son, brother and friend with a kind and gentle personality. His early working years were spent at bush work - cutting trees or working on the saw mill - locally or in the Atikokan, Ontario area. He was involved in carpentry and farm work for himself while also working as a labourer on several local farms. Martin married Lois Maus in 1971, and they settled in the Piney area. In 1986, the family moved to Mitchell, Manitoba and he obtained work with Manitoba Hydro, culminating in his 1999 retirement - a 10 year career, of which he was very proud. Martin appreciated the opportunity to make two trips to Europe, where he visited Hungary and Germany. In Hungary, he met a number of close relatives in the village where his father had lived before emigrating in 1927. However, the joy of retirement was curtailed by the onset of Parkinson's disease - an illness with which he valiantly struggled. To foster his love of country life, Martin and other family members built the family cottage at Buffalo Point starting in 1979, using lumber from trees that he had personally cut on his and the Maus farms. Despite the hard work involved, this was a labour of love and has provided the family with many happy memories which now extend to the next generation. The family is deeply grateful to the home care program whose staff provided superb intense care and assistance to Martin, especially over the past six months, to allow him to remain at home. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 Hwy. 52 West, Steinbach, MB. Ash interment will follow at the Menisino Cemetery. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba (7 - 414 Westmount Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2J 1P2, www.parkinson.ca). Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with the Horvath and Maus families. Martin, Lois, Gail, April and Frank were wonderful neighbors and we missed them when they moved. No matter the number of years between encounters, it was always a pleasure to see Martin. His smile and genuine happiness at seeing you always left you wishing you could see him more often. Sorry that we are unable to attend the service, but please know that we are thinking of you. - Posted by: Bernice Pederson, Daphne and Daniel Semeniuk and families (neighbors and friends) on: Nov 13, 2014
