Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAUDREY MARGARET SWAN On November 3, Audrey Swan passed away peacefully at Golden West Centennial Lodge. She had persevered positively and without complaint through more than 30 years of dealing with MS. Audrey was the loving daughter of the late Grace and Milward Swan, and brother of the late Jack Swan. She is survived by her brother Gordon and Edith Swan, Jack's widow Murlie Swan, several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She greatly enjoyed the many opportunities to be with Gordon and Edith's son Doug, daughter Ellen, and their children. All children, all people gave Audrey much joy and love. Audrey grew up in Norwood, where she lived for over 50 years. After attending United College Collegiate and Norwood Collegiate, she graduated from Manitoba Teacher's College, and the University of Manitoba. In addition to her teaching degree, she achieved A.M.M and A.R.C.T. in Music Theory, and won the Mary L. Robertson Scholarship for Piano Performance. During her 25 years of teaching in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, Audrey prepared many choirs for the Manitoba Music Festival, and introduced handbells to the elementary music program. Also, as a registered Music teacher, she privately taught countless students piano and theory, and was much in demand as an accompanist. Always interested in Youth Work, Audrey for many years was very involved with Brereton CGIT Camp and the Winnipeg CGIT Board. She was President of the Junior Musical Club and the University of Manitoba Music Diploma Association. She was a valued member of the P.E.O and the University Women's Club. Audrey used her education and experience for beautiful service and spirit. She gave fully and freely of her encouraging and joyful disposition to her students, her church, her family and to all whom she met. On November 22 at 11:00 a.m. (preludes at 10:45), in the church to which she belonged all her life, Broadway-First Baptist, (Honeyman and Walnut) a worship will be held celebrating Audrey's contribution to this world: beautiful and beneficial sounds, sensitivities, and smiles, and her now joining eternally the choruses and compositions of the heavenly spheres. The family expresses sincere gratitude to the loving and caring staff at Audrey's home for the last five years, Golden West Centennial Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to Golden West - Audrey Swan Memorial Fund (811 School Street, Winnipeg R2Y 0S8) or to the Swan Family Fund at her beloved Broadway-First Baptist Church (790 Honeyman Ave., Winnipeg R3G 0Y1) will be much appreciated. My Auntie Audrey was and is amazing. Always a great lady in my estimation, she was kind, creative, refined, hospitable, gracious and tenacious, and that's just the beginning. Part of my life since before I can remember anything, she has always been a part of our family, despite our lack of genetic connection. From family dinners, Christmases, Thanksgivings and Easters, our family wasn't complete if she wasn't there. During my high school years, I would make my way to her home (around the corner from my school) for lunch once every couple of weeks. It was a time of great conversation and connection. I remember looking at her fridge - covered with the photos of all the other children and adopted family members that she adopted - and wondering how she could keep track of so many people. Always well put together and stylish, I know it was hard for her when she was no longer living in her own home, but even so, she welcomed us in her new digs and met my rambunctious toddlers with patience and joy. I am so grateful that she was a part of my life. I am grateful that she is now gracing Heaven with her presence. The music will be all the better for having her there. - Posted by: Jacqueline Solomon (Niece by association) on: Dec 11, 2014

The Swan and Pound families have been friends through Broadway First Baptist Church in Winnipeg for a number of generations. When our children were young, Alan and I took them to the Swan cottage, "Kelso", at Ponema on Lake Winnipeg. Audrey was always so pleased to see us and graciously share her family cottage with us. Our daughter Jessica recently recounted to me that, as a child, she thought Audrey very elegant and dignified and she had beautiful snowy white hair. Jessica thought her name, "Audrey-the-Swan", perfectly suited her. I will always remember Audrey for her radiant smile in all situations. Anyone who has played handbells knows that bell ringing takes concentration. The most difficult thing to do as a bell ringer is look pleasant while you are doing so. Audrey was the star of our bell choir at Broadway. She ALWAYS had a smile while ringing her bells. So, when I play bells, I do my best to smile for Audrey. She will be remembered with much love by the family. - Posted by: Ann Pound-Holl, Alan, Elizabeth, Jessica and Ted (family friends) on: Nov 23, 2014

My mother (Eleanor Janke) and her have been friends for a very long time and "Aunt" Audrey would always come over to visit us when we were young. She had such a kind heart and soul and was always smiling. She will be deeply missed. - Posted by: Karen Peters (Friend) on: Nov 21, 2014

Dear Gordon, Edith and Family, What a lovely tribute to Auntie Audrey. It has been many years since we have all been in touch, but we have lovely memories of the Swan and Murphy Family times. Dick was my Dad, Sheila my Mom and Peg and Pat Murphy my Grandparents. Audrey was such a lovely person, she taught me Music at Silver Heights Collegiate, I always thought she was such an elegant, beautiful woman. Our Sincerest Sympathy to you all, Kerry (Murphy) and Bob Green - Posted by: Kerry (Murphy) and Bob Green (Family Friend) on: Nov 20, 2014

Audrey was a beautiful and gracious lady. She took time to encourage me in my piano studies (I started at age 37, when my kids started lessons), even allowing me to play my grade 6 exam pieces in her home, as a " mock" exam, and offered me valuable advice on my playing. A number of years ago, she moved into a care home and had to give up her beautiful Kawai piano - the very same piano that is now in my own home. I am honoured to own this instrument now, and I will continue to play it in gratitude, in memory of Audrey. - Posted by: Danny Saydak (Friend ) on: Nov 17, 2014

Audrey was my piano teacher for 9 years. Well I remember her gentle ways and great patience. I can still hear the ticking of the clock on the mantel in her living room as I sat in the front foyer waiting for my lesson. Then there were the yearly examinations with sweaty palms, Christmas concerts in the living room on Monck, the Junior musical club and recording on CBC radio. Classical melodies still live in my head and evoke good memories of many hours spent playing scales and triads. Thank you for your patience my teacher. - Posted by: Jane (Grover) DeLeeuw (former Norwood piano student) on: Nov 16, 2014

Growing up in Norwood I lived next door to the Swans. My sisters and brothers and I took piano lessons from Audrey for many years. My sister went much further with the piano studies than I did thanks to Audrey's teaching. I remember how difficult it was for me to convince Audrey I had done all the assigned practicing. I remember her saying, "That's strange, Kathy, I haven't heard that piece once this week and my windows have all been open!" Hard to fool her! My other fond memory is remembering her very short fingernails and the erasers (can't recall the kind) that she used that left "crumbs" everywhere. We had concerts in her living room and always were encouraged to be in the music festival. Audrey gave many, many people the gift of music and love of the piano. - Posted by: Kathleen Hall (nee White) (Neighbour and piano student of Audrey's) on: Nov 16, 2014
