ALAN WARREN FULSHER July 5, 1947 - November 15, 2014 Peacefully with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer, Alan passed away. Alan is survived by his darling daughter Julie and her husband Dan, grandchildren Alex and Isabelle, brothers Brian and Chris (Brenda), best friend Sandy, stepdaughter Kristina and her children Zachary and Amanda, Aunty Irene and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Isabelle and Roy, brother Kenny, sister-in-law Candy, niece Melissa and of course Uncle Freddie. Al was a lifelong resident of West St Paul and spent most of it on Evelyn Avenue in Middlechurch. He and Sandy, although living apart, were best friends. He worked for the Motor Vehicle Branch of the Manitoba Government and later MPI for 33 years serving as Director of Driver and Motor Vehicle Licensing before his retirement in 2007. Al was an accomplished shuffleboard player and won many provincial and national championships through his 30 plus years of competitive play. He was inducted into the Manitoba Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame this past spring, an honor he was quite proud of. His summertime passion was golf. He played many years in the Department of Highways league and travelled with friends on an annual winter golf trip. Alan loved family and always looked forward to gatherings with his Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. The annual Boxing Day celebrations are legendary. We could always count on him for a bottle of wine and a shrimp ring and will miss him dearly. The back-yard pool was a favorite place for Al. He had many hours of enjoyment entertaining and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren as they played in the pool, often for hours at a time. Alan's greatest love was Julie, They spoke every day; he always opened and closed the conversation with "My Darling Daughter" Our gracious thanks to the wonderful 3rd floor staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care during Alan's last days. A special thanks to Sandy. You were always there for him, during the good days and the bad. A celebration of his life will be held 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 20 at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St Paul. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Alan's name to Cancer Care Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. If music be the food of love, play on! With deepest condolences to you and your family. I'll remember Al as a man who enjoyed cards, a glass of wine, doing crossword puzzles (in ink no less), shuffleboard, and a little golf. Al was my boss at DDVL and I'm proud to say, my friend. We'll all miss his big smile. God Bless! - Posted by: Bob Chapman (Former boss at DDVL - Worked with him for about 30 years) on: Nov 25, 2014

Met Al at a shuffleboard tournament and I guess he thought I might be a good mixed doubles partner. We clicked & enjoyed a few years of success. Even ended up at the Canadians one year. So sad to read of his passing. God rest his soul. - Posted by: Faye Serofin (shuffleboard partner and friend) on: Nov 24, 2014

I worked for Al at 1075 Portage & later at City Place for more than 20 years and I rarely saw him without a smile on his face. If you asked him how he was doing, his standard reply was 'never better'. He was a man with his priorities straight - family & friends came first. His funeral yesterday was proof of this with the large turnout and the funny & loving stories we were all treated to. Julie your dad would have been so proud of the poise and humor you displayed yesterday when you spoke about him. To Sandy & the rest of Al's family the celebration of Al's life that you organized was a wonderful tribute to the happy & funny guy Al was. - Posted by: Catherine Hendricks (Co-worker and friend) on: Nov 21, 2014

With deepest sympathy to all of Alan's family in your loss. We very much enjoyed the times we spent together when he travelled to Vancouver, such a kind, loving and friendly man, who was all about family. You could just feel the love he had for you all. I know our dear friend Brian Fulsher will especially miss "watching" hockey and curling long distance with Alan. RIP, Alan, and know you are among good company. - Posted by: Brent and Angela Bartok (Friend) on: Nov 21, 2014

Al was a great boss to work for. I enjoyed the festive System's Christmas parties where Al's staff would get together and celebrate Christmas and enjoy an evening together as not boss and employee, but as friends. I also enjoyed the birthday lunches at the Paradise restaurant where Al allowed us to have a monthly get together to celebrate employee birthdays. Those memories are cherished and will not be forgotten. Our condolences to the Fulsher family on your loss. - Posted by: Eldon and Rachel Parkinson (Co-worker & friend) on: Nov 20, 2014

I met Al over 30 years ago through shuffleboard and had a long friendship. When MVB and MPI merged, I had the pleasure of working with Al at 1075 Portage. Al was an amazing person, treated everyone with respect and was one of the nicest people that I have ever met. He lived life to the fullest. My condolences to Julie and Sandy and the entire family. I will always remember Al as a big guy with a gentle heart. We drove to college together in my old clunker and during breaks we played foosball for quarters so we could buy coffee. He was fantastic on defence and my main contribution was not to block his shots. Later we worked together at Motor Vehicle Branch and Alan could always be counted on for a cheerful good morning and a big smile. He extended that work into a great 33 year career. Al, we will miss you! - Posted by: James MacDonald (Friend) on: Nov 19, 2014

Uncle Alan will be dearly missed. He was great to be around. Lots of laughs and wisdom to share. He was always a generous host on our visits to Winnipeg. Will miss talking sports and golf swing mechanics! Like many before him he was taken from us too soon. - Posted by: Lee Fulsher and Family (Nephew) on: Nov 18, 2014

I met Al many years ago in the Green Brier where he was dominant in shuffleboard and smiles. A friendship started and drifted from the Brier, Ranch House, Legion 30, Sals and the unknown Legion Branch at his house. Although I never saw him for a number of years, that smile burned into my memory. You will be missed. - Posted by: Rik Zatonski (Friend) on: Nov 18, 2014

Once again our family is forced to decide whether or not to grieve the passing of one of our dearly beloved, or to thank the Lord for his taking our cousin home and offering him relief from his pain and suffering. Our thoughts at this time go to all family and friends but especially Al's best friend and loving daughter, Julie. Julie, the pain we feel can't compare to yours and I can only wish we could send a big hug over the internet but believe me we have lots saved for the next time we see you. God bless you and grant you the strength you need to get through this trying time. All our love xxxx - Posted by: Gerald & Nadine Andrews (Cousins) on: Nov 18, 2014

So sad to hear of Alan's passing.....my heartfelt condolences to Alan's family and extended family. My brother John and I have been thinking and talking about Alan and growing up in Middlechurch and the fun we had! OMG! 'Those were the days my friend'. The late weekend nights and always stopping in to see if Uncle Freddie's lights were on....they always were.... Such memories. Alan was our gentle giant keeping us safe from harm. Sort of. Fulsher, Ola, whatever term of endearment we called him, he was a true friend who generally erred on the side of caution involving hijinks. Sort of. He always talked about possible dangers before leading the charge... Rest well my friend. You touched a lot of people with your light. - Posted by: Tom Crerar (Neighbourhood friend, partner in crime....) on: Nov 18, 2014
