ERIKA PANKIEWICZ (SUKKAU) On December 9, 2014, Erika Pankiewicz passed away peacefully at home in the loving arms of her husband, Gerold. Erika is now free from the confines of her illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Jakob and Maria Sukkau. Left to mourn her passing are her loving husband Gerold, her children Stephen (Melanie), Lara Heinrichs (Kirk Walker), granddaughter Jordan, sister Hilda Zubrycki (Vern), brothers David (Katie) and Jakob (Helene), as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Born in Niederchortiza, Ukraine, she was only three days old when the family fled the Red Army, joining the retreating Germans and moving out by train in cattle cars. The next 10 years were spent mainly in Austria and Paraguay. Upon coming to Canada in 1953, she found life much more peaceful. Most of her years since have been happily spent in North Kildonan where she attended school, graduating from River East Collegiate and also subsequently teaching there. It is here that she met the love of her life, Gerold Pankiewicz, on her first day of teaching. After the birth of their first child, Stephen, Erika devoted herself wholly to her family. Soon after, Lara was born. The family home was warm and secure with Erika as the steady compass guiding all activities. When her granddaughter was born, her great love overcame all obstacles and the family grew richer. Until the day of her passing, Erika insisted on being active in her kitchen still wanting to nourish her family. Erika also showed great loyalty to her friends whom she valued highly. It was her gift to think well of everyone. She also enjoyed reading, especially historical fiction, and travelling with her family. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home. Thank-you for the wonderful medical support provided by Dr Lindsey Cattani, the Pulmonary Respiratory team at the Health Sciences Centre and the Palliative Care team, especially Ann Ediger. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Lung Association would be appreciated. KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 HENDERSON HWY. 204-338-0331 Condolences may be sent to www.klassenfuneralhome.com

  • We met Erika a few times when she and Gerold came to visit Steve in Ontario. She was always gracious and warm. We also feel we came to know her through Steve, who continued her teaching legacy of excellence. Please accept our heartfelt condolences. We will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. - Posted by: Dorelle Webster and Francis Scholten (friends of son, Steve) on: Dec 15, 2014

  • MY condolences to Mr. Pankiewicz and family. I was so blessed to have her as my homeroom teacher. She was radiant. She greeted us daily with a vibrant smile. She was so positive and such a lady. I recall when she announced to the class she was getting married to Mr. Pankiewicz, the tall dark handsome teacher. I as class president asked the class if they would like to buy her something for her honeymoon. We bought her a beautiful turquoise set which would look beautiful on her with her sparkling blue eyes and oh so perfect blonde hair. In later years I would bump into her at the stores and craft sales. Always a perfect role model. She was lovely. God Bless all of you. - Posted by: Lynne Cooper (former student from the 60`s) on: Dec 15, 2014

  • Over the past couple of years, I was able to get to know Mrs Pankiewicz through Lara. She was a lovely lady and will be missed. My condolences to her family on their loss. - Posted by: Sheena Walker () on: Dec 11, 2014

  • Our deepest sympathy to the whole family. Erika was our best maid at our wedding. We kept in touch for awhile, and then with both having families, we drifted apart, a bit. She was a very good friend, and was always available when needed. She loved her family, and we got to know Steven and Lara also. I will miss her a lot, and was so glad that we connected again.
