JEAN HOLLINGER 1919 - 2014 Our dearest Mom passed away peacefully at Red River Place in Selkirk on December 13, 2014. She is lovingly remembered by daughter Terry Wall (Robert) and son John (Andree); granddaughters Nika (Steve) and Danielle (Kurtis); great-grandsons Stacy and Shay, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Casimir (in 2001); parents, John and Tekla Parfaniuk; siblings, Millie, Anne, Steve and Marion. Mom was born on October 20, 1919 and raised on the family farm in Rossdale. She was always proud of the Ukrainian pioneer spirit that was the backbone of her family growing up. Jean continued her education at Normal School and went on to teach at many schools in the Lockport and Selkirk areas until 1984. She and Casimir ("that boy from Gonor") were married in 1942 and settled in Selkirk after the war. It was there in that little house on Rosser Avenue that Mom raised Terry and John and gave her heart and soul to be being the best mother and wife that she could. Tending her garden, teaching, entertaining family and friends, being involved in Gonor Church activities and looking after her children and Dad, were Mom's greatest joys in life. When Nika and Danielle came along, and then Nika's children, Stacy and Shay, in later years, this only added to Mom's delight and she was proud to be called Baba and Great-Grandmother. After Dad's passing, Mom enjoyed her time at the Selkirk Knights Centre apartments and most recently at Red River Place Personal Care Home. The family appreciates the wonderful compassionate care Mom received in her final years at Red River Place, where Cindy, Mathew and all the staff always made every effort to ensure Mom's comfort and safety. A Mass to celebrate Mom's life will be held at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church at 6297 Henderson Highway (Gonor district) on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 10:00 am. Interment to follow in the Church cemetery. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Terry and John, Wilf and I were sorry to hear of the passing of your dear mother, Jean. May loving memories ease your grief. Sincerely, Debbie and Wilf Bedard - Posted by: Debbie Bedard (friend) on: Dec 16, 2014

  • With Sincere Condolences to you and yours on the loss of a great lady. She was my kindergarten teacher and we lived down the back lane on Pacific Ave where I grew up. Mrs. Hollinger was a patient and quiet spoken lady...as a kid growing up, it was hard to believe that your teacher lived down the lane from you. May she Rest in Peace...Maureen (Balcaen) Paskaruk - Posted by: Maureen (Balcaen) Paskaruk (student & neighbour down the lane) on: Dec 16, 2014

  • Dear Terry and John and Families: So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. She was an inspirational teacher as I had her in primary grade school. Both your Dad and Mom were good friends of my parents and they all worked very hard together for the Ukrainian Catholic Parish of Holy Trinity. God Bless. - Posted by: Beverley Los (Friend) on: Dec 16, 2014
