CARSON B. RIST With loving memories, we have to say goodbye to a husband, a father, a grandfather, a son, a brother, and a friend who passed away suddenly on December 18, 2014. Carson leaves behind his loving wife Doris, daughter Lauren, son Joshua, daughter-in-law Jamie, granddaughter Kaliyah, father Senno, mother Agnes, brother Wes, and sister-in-law Kerri. He is now reunited with his brother Ken and sister-in-law Claudia. Carson had the amazing opportunity to work side-by-side with his father, his brothers, and later his son, in the family construction business. Carson used his engineering training to shape and run Gateway Construction, and eventually became owner and president of the company. Always a visionary, he branched out from commercial construction into residential construction as Discovery Homes. His latest construction project was also his most personal project as he spent last summer building the family cabin at Nutimik Lake. His love of the outdoors and being immersed in nature was a way for him to connect with his family and faith. Because his faith was central to everything he believed, who he was, and what he did, Carson seized every opportunity that came his way. His passion was to build up others and he was generous with all he had to givetangible or intangiblewhile never looking for recognition. He was a pillar of faith and strength to his family, church, and community. His personal mission was to extend hospitality to all those around him and he was driven by his compassion for others. While he loved the serenity of fishing on the quiet early morning waters, sitting by the fire, sipping coffee while reading his Bible, and taking leisurely walks with his wife, he also knew how to appreciated fast, well-built European cars, amusement parks, water sports, and his hometown Winnipeg Jets. He enjoyed embarking on new adventures and traveling the world with his family and wife. His unwavering love for his wife was deep and strong and served as a foundation for a safe and nurturing haven, guiding his children to love one another and love others. He enjoyed making his granddaughter laugh and looked forward to meeting his expectant grandchild. Carson leaves behind a huge void in the lives of those around him but he also leaves behind a great legacy of the selfless man he was. A memorial service will be held at Gateway Christian Community Church (851 Panet Road) at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2014. A public viewing will be held prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Donations may be made in his honor to the Gateway Skills Development Centre in Kigali, Rwanda (For more information or to donate, please call Kevin at 204-989-6580 ext. 583).

I just found out yesterday from a colleague that Carson recently passed away. I was totally shocked and still find it hard to believe. I worked with Carson back in 1984 at a small consulting engineering firm called Stellar Consulting. We immediately became good friends. I will never forget how kind Carson was. My wife was expecting our third child back in 1984 and it was a hot, hot August with sweltering temperatures and we didn't have air conditioning in our home at the time. There was a knock at our door that August and lo and behold it was Carson with a gift for us. It was an air conditioner that he promptly installed in our bedroom window. I will never ever forget that act of kindness. Carson you were a special man and a good friend. Until we meet again your friend Luc. - Posted by: Luc Vanderdonckt (Colleague) on: Apr 02, 2015

My best "Carson" story. We were shattered to hear about Carson. It’s unbelievable. Doris, Jamie and Lauren, may God be near to you all. I hope that your good memories will bring joy in the midst of your grief. May the good moments (& I'm sure there are many, many) linger and glow. Here's my favorite Carson story (Doris was there -- she can vouch for it). We were in India, leading a group of King's Commission students. We had arrived late at a remote, rural train station. We had to make the connection or wait another 24 hours. To our dismay, the train was already pulling away. What to do? We followed Carson's adventurous example. Instantly, we all became Indiana Joneses. Backpacks bumping on our shoulders, we charged down the platform, leaping onto the steps of the accelerating train. Breathless, flushed, perspiring and laughing we all got on safe and rode on to new adventures -- Carson in the lead. God bless and comfort you all. May His nearness be your good (Psalm 73:28, NAS). - Posted by: Dave and Velma Perry (Friends) on: Feb 03, 2015

Thank you to all who have commented. Our family will never tire from hearing new stories about my dad from others. It's a gift. We have been missing him dearly. His strength, his great sense of humour and the way he laughed, and how well he took care of us all. He was a good man. Love you dad. - Posted by: Lauren Rist (Daughter) on: Feb 01, 2015

Carson was my first year engineering locker partner who I had met working for his father, Senno, at Gateway Construction after high school. He was a Christian and a great fun loving guy. - Posted by: Garth MacKenzie (Friend from Calgary) on: Jan 04, 2015

I was shocked to learn of Carson's passing. Carson was my first youth leader where we both grew up, at Mission Baptist Church. My memories include many youth events, including a cross country trip to Toronto for a conference with eight of us in a van. But one moment that sticks in my mind is when we had an opportunity to room together in a hotel and seeing Carson read his Bible both before he went to sleep, and then again first thing in the morning. That had an incredible impact on me. As Christians, we find comfort in knowing that Carson is now present with the Lord. My sympathies to Doris and family, and to Seno, Agnes and Wes. Till we meet again... - Posted by: Dan Sudfeld () on: Dec 26, 2014

I met Doris and Carson while attending Mission church in Winnipeg. Carson was soft spoken, and always kind while still having that adventerous spirit. Ken and Carson were so close and it is somewhat comforting that the two brothers are reunited. It is,however, a shock, and a great loss for those left behind. There is no doubt that he was a man of integrity and had a great love for the Lord. This was not only apparent in his personal life but also in his business life. He came to our office a few weeks ago, and unfortunately I missed his visit, but everyone in our office commented how Carson made a point of saying hello to everyone. He didn't have to do that but that was who he was as an individual. I know we all have great memories of him in young people's group. He will not be forgotten for his kindness, laughter, integrity, and commitment to his faith. Doris, Our deepest sympathy to your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. From our family at Champion Ironworks Ltd, and from Arnie and I personally, we wish you peace and comfort that only God can give during this very difficult time. - Posted by: Dorothy (maretzki) Kleiber (friend) on: Dec 24, 2014

I was shocked and terribly saddened of the news of Carson's passing. I've known Carson as long as I can remember. My brothers and I grew up spending time with Carson, Ken and Wes and I have so many happy memories of snowmobiling, water-skiing and doing youth group car rallies with Carson. He was always a wonderful guy and grew into a principled man with deep faith. My deepest condolences go out to Doris, Lauren, Joshua/Jamie, Wes/Kerri, Senno & Agnes. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. - Posted by: Debra Tozzo (Friend) on: Dec 23, 2014

Filed under all the things they never teach you in seminary, in July 2009 during my last month at New Life Ministries I was responsible for a major landscape playground project at our neighbourhood school. But because earlier that year Carson came to a meeting with me we had no worries. A prince of a man. To Doris and family, my heartfelt sympathy. - Posted by: Larry Gregan (Friend) on: Dec 22, 2014
