Maria is also survived by two sisters, Stina Gislason and Beatrice Gudmundson of Arborg, and two sisters-in-law, Doris Gibson of Riverton and Vera and Bert Osborne of Arborg. Maria was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, George, in June 2005, her son Lorne at age six in 1955, her parents Kristinn and Frida Kristinnson, her brothers Steini and Albert, her son-in-law Bjorn Bjornson in 2004 as well as several sisters and brothers-in-law. Maria was born August 25, 1918, at her family home in Geysir. As a young woman, she worked for many families in Geysir, Arborg, Vidir, Riverton, etc. during the birth of children. She also worked for McDonald's Aircraft in the early 1940s building wings on airplanes during the Second World War. She was married to George on November 6, 1943, and they farmed in the Bjarmi area until 1950 when they moved to Geysir where they farmed for the next 37 years. With boundless energy Maria was very involved in the farm operations, and found time to knit hundreds of pairs of socks and mitts for her family, as well as afghans and crocheted place mats. She always had an abundance of fresh baking on hand, and made sure her family had a full course meal, even though it was served in the middle of the field where they were working. Maria was a member of the Geysir Ladies Aid for several years. She enjoyed the constant visits of family and many friends and loved to see her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchild. Her family will always remember her encouragement, her kindness, generosity and unwavering support. Maria moved to Arborg Assisted Living in August 2006, and then to the Arborg Personal Care Home in June 2012. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at both centres for their kind, compassionate and attentive care. Although her memory declined significantly in the last few years, we will all remember her graciousness and the gentle smile she had for everyone. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ardal-Geysir Lutheran Church with Pastor Claire Speary officiating. Pallbearers are her grandchildren, Tim, Rene, Loreen, Tracey, Mark, Lorne and Anna. Donations in her memory may be made to the Geysir Cemetery Fund, Box 796, Arborg, MB R0C 0A0.
