Date of Passing: Jan 02, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOSEPH PAUL WASNY It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, husband, uncle, cousin and friend to the hands of God on January 2, 2015 with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his wife Valerie Luchka; parents Pauline Melinchuk and John Wazney; brothers Frank, Stanley and Walter; sisters Francis, Mary and Joan. He leaves to mourn his sons Garrett, Brett (Sharon) and Lance; grandchildren Cameron and Cole; brothers Charlie and Casmer; sisters Helen and Pauline and many relatives and friends. Joseph Paul Wasny was born March 14, 1933, in Melrose, Manitoba. He grew up on the Wasny family farm near Cook's Creek, the eighth of 12 children. At 17, he moved to Winnipeg and started his first job as an apprentice with McDonald Aircraft. In 1951 he joined Canadian National Railways (CN) and proudly served as a carman for nearly 50 years until his retirement in 1989. In 1958 he married Valerie Luchka at St. Michael's Church in Cook's Creek. Between 1960 and 1962 the couple gave birth to three children: Garrett, Brett and Lance. In 1963 the Wasny family moved to Transcona, Manitoba, and lived there for nearly 30 years. In 1969 Joe built a cottage near Clearwater Bay, Ontario. The property was the family's summer playground for boating, sailing, swimming, fishing, water skiing and blueberry picking. Joe and his wife Valerie also travelled widely to destinations including Hawaii, the Caribbean and Ukraine. In 1994 Joe became a grandfather with the birth of Cameron and again with the arrival of Cole in 1996, both sons of Brett and Sharon Wasny. In 2008 Joe and Val moved to Selkirk and lived in a retirement condo until Valerie's passing in 2011. Joe was an exceptional father, adoring grandfather and wonderful friend who was loved by all who knew him at home, work and in the community. Memorial Mass was held on Wednesday, January 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church, Selkirk, with Fr. Stan Gacek officiating. Interment was in the Notre Dame Cemetery Columbarium.
