MARGARET (PEGGY) EDWARDS Peggy passed away peacefully, her family by her side, on January 7, 2015 at the Tuxedo Villa. Peggy was born Margaret Fortune in Wexford, Eire in 1923. She was predeceased by her husband Harry, her parents Thomas and Elizabeth Fortune, brothers Joe and Pat, and sister Mary. She is survived by her son John (Lois), grandsons Michael and Sean (Kristen), brother Ibar, and sisters Bridie, Eta and Tess, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Great Britain, Australia and Asia. Harry and Peggy met in Cranley, England during the Second World War. They were married and came to Harry's home in Toronto. Harry's career with Canadian National Railways took the family to Montreal and finally to Winnipeg in 1968. Throughout her life, Peggy was very involved with the United Church. She and Harry held memberships at St. Paul's, Harstone, and Kirkfield Park where Peggy played a leadership role in Christian Education. Over the years Peggy held many staff associate and volunteer positions in the United Church and in Winnipeg Presbytery. Peggy loved spending time with her family. Her grandsons were her absolute joy and she particularly enjoyed taking each of them on a tour of the British Isles with a stop to visit her family in Wexford. Additionally, Peggy was an avid gardener; her back yard was an oasis where she loved to feed and watch birds and care for the fish in her rock garden. Her compassion and care will be greatly missed. A celebration of Peggy's life will be held at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17. In lieu of flowers, if you so desire, donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Tuxedo Villa for the care Peggy received during her two year stay. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We have known Peggy for many years as a friend and associate from Harstone and Kirkfield Park United Churches and consider it a privilege to have both personal and church affiliations with her. We will remember her by her wit and warm personality. May she be in God's care and rest in peace. Sincere condolences to son John (Lois) and grandsons Michael and Sean (Kristen). - Posted by: Fritz and Helen Engel (Friend) on: Jan 15, 2015

  • I knew Peggy through our association as volunteers at Kirkfield Park United Church - we were also both residents of the Westwood community. She truly was a remarkable woman and an inspiration as an outstanding Christian! Her energy and enthusiasm as well as her intelligence were true assets to our church and community. I would pick her up to go to a meeting and she'd be out the door and in the car with some story or other of what she had just been doing or what one of family members had been up to! She was such a pleasure to be with and I will always remember her. Sincere condolences to her much loved family. - Posted by: Joanne Klumper (friend) on: Jan 12, 2015

  • Peggy was a remarkable woman. She was a great friend and supporter during my ten years as the minister at Kirkfield Park United Church. She had a keen intellect, a kind and loving heart, and a true devotion to the church. She was a faithful disciple who served the church in many ways. But her zeal was an expression of both heart and mind. She was bright, insightful, well-informed, intuitive, and courageous. She had a delightful sense of humour and never took herself too seriously. We stayed in touch over the years and I am saddened by the loss of this true friend. But what a privilege to have known her. She was someone who truly made a difference. - Posted by: Colin Peterson (friend) on: Jan 10, 2015
