JOHN HENRY MAREK August 19, 1922 - January 10, 2015 Peacefully on the evening of Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Beausejour Hospital, our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away. John was born on the homestead in the RM of Brokenhead, Manitoba on August 19, 1922 to George and Rose (Bukoski) Marek. He is survived by his Cupcake Helen (Pataluck), of 69 years, his daughters Rosemarie (Jack) Wong and Janice (Johnny) Ursy of Toronto, grandsons (the Wong boys) Scott (Monique), Darren (Lucy) and Keith. John is also survived by great-grandchildren Dylan and Morgan Wong, his siblings Stanley, Jean Prowse, Eddie (Vi), Joyce (Arley) Corbett, all of Beausejour, Ken (Phyllis) of Portage la Prairie, and numerous nieces, nephews and families. John was predeceased by his parents, sisters Kay Chorney, Emily Mazur, and brothers Joe and Mike. Our Gigi loved working the land. In later years when he became unable to farm himself he continued to take enjoyment out of watching those who farmed the land for him. He also built homes with his brother Mike. He was a man of patience when even taking apart the most complicated of items to repair them. He was constantly building something out of nothing using remnants of other things. There were never leftover parts. He continually showed his grandsons guidance in every which way. The love of his life was his wife and he was the most remarkable Gigi to his family. His grandchildren will always have the best memories filled with plenty of laughter. He always welcomed visitors, having a beer and reminiscing. He maintained his humour, fun, and loving personality up until the very end. The family wants to send a special thanks to Dr. Partyka and the most awesome nursing staff at the Beausejour Hospital for their kindness and caring as well as to all those who came to visit. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Beausejour Hospital TV Fund, Box 1614, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0 or to the Manitoba Council for Exceptional Children, Box 43035, 74-1555 Regent Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2C 4J2. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour, MB. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Uncle John - What a beautiful person! Who can forget his cheerful smile, his piercing blue eyes, and down-to-earth personality. Although I didn't get to spend too much time with him, I do have many good memories of visits with him and Aunt Helen. There is no doubt an extra star shining brightly in our night sky. On behalf of Pat, myself, and children (Krysten & Kyle), our deepest condolences to Aunt Helen, daughters Rosemarie & Janice and their families, as well as other family members and friends. You will always have a special place in my heart and prayers. Rest at peace on the wings of your Guardian Angel. Watch over us. - Posted by: Loretta (Leclerc) Marek (Wife of Pat Marek (John's nephew)) on: Jan 27, 2015

  • We would like to offer our condolences to my Aunt Helen and the rest of the family. My Uncle John was a very nice man I still remember listening to the old records on the farm (Nestor Pistor) and fetching cold beer out of that magical creek for him and my father. Lots of good times growing up except for that rooster!!! He will be missed! - Posted by: Vern, Chantal and Sydney Mazur (Uncle) on: Jan 21, 2015

  • My parents lived down the road, about a mile east, from John and Helen's farm. One memory that comes to mind of John involved helping John Pleskacz (the next door neighbor to John and Helen) baling hay. It was a typical sweltering hot summer's day and we were helping bring in his hay. The old storm clouds were a brewing and churning as we were bringing the bales in. Everything was done by hand, tossing the bales from the rack to the stack, building the stack, etc. John was just pouring sweat as we tossed up the bales on the stack. It was an art in building a hay stack that would stand up to the wind and weather and John was a master in doing it. We had a case of "warm" beer cooling in the 90+ degree heat around the corner. (John Pleskacz didn't have a fridge). After a many good "brewskies" we got the bales up and the stack tied in - before the rains started. Our reward from John Pleskacz was more warm beer with Klik and jam sandwiches. Our condolences to the family. Rest in Peace John!
