Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCAROLYN ELIZABETH OUELLETTE HAMPLE (née PRESCOTT) Carolyn died peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at St. Boniface Hospital, following complications from a long-standing heart condition. Predeceased by her ex-husband, Kenneth Ouellette, her parents, John Angus and Mary Elisabeth Prescott (née Miller); niece Victoria Prescott; nephew-by-marriage, Brett Waddell; and niece-by-marriage, Sherri Flynn, Carolyn is survived by her siblings: Judith Flynn (Peter), Thomas Prescott (Lorraine), Lorna Prescott, Joan Colnett (Russell) and by her ex-sister-in-law, Joan Smith, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews: Laura Curbishley (née Prescott) (Terry), Catherine-Mary Flynn, Sharon Stimpson (née Sutton) (Danny), Christine Prescott, Michael Sutton, Benjamin Flynn, Russell Jr. (Sheri Tarrington), Patrick (Chelsea) and Jessica Curbishley (Joseph Waltbauer), Breandan Waddell-Flynn, Robin Stimpson, Nicholas and Adam Rusnak, and Wyatt and Aurora Colnett. She will always be remembered as the much-loved "cool" Auntie who listened with sympathetic understanding to the confidences of two generations of nieces and nephews. Born August 8, 1942, Carolyn was John and Mary Prescott's fourth child and third daughter. A voracious reader from her earliest childhood, she was barely 21, when, having graduated with a BA (Hons.) and MA from St. John's College (University of Manitoba) she obtained a position in the English Department of the University of Winnipeg, then United College. In mid-career, she was awarded a Canada Council Doctoral Fellowship which enabled her to write and successfully defend a dissertation on Shakespeare. Until illness forced her untimely retirement, Carolyn had conveyed her own passion and enthusiasm for literature to generations of students through her gifted teaching, an ability recognized by the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Teaching Award. She often mentioned how much she especially enjoyed discussions about Shakespeare with the University of Winnipeg's theatre students. In retirement, Carolyn discovered a talent for water-colour painting. She also undertook a number of free-lance editing tasks. A woman of unusual intelligence, wit, and warmth combined with a lively appreciation for the arts and nature, she enjoyed many happy summers at her cottage in Victoria Beach with her dogs and cats, and generously shared this retreat with friends and family alike. She will be deeply mourned and sorely missed. The family owes a special debt of gratitude to the patient-care professionals at St. Boniface Hospital, but above all to Robin Stimpson whose cool headedness and quick thinking saved Carolyn's life after her first cardiac arrest last November. A celebration of Carolyn's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flower donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6 or the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6. I was saddened to read today of the passing of Carolyn Hample. I was one of her students at the University of Winnipeg and will always remember her as a wonderful teacher. Studying Shakespeare under her tutelage was a part of my university education that I will always treasure. In fact she was kind enough to write me a reference for medical school, which I will be forever grateful for. She is remembered fondly and I only wish I had the opportunity to tell her this in person. - Posted by: Nayana Suchak (former student) on: Dec 08, 2017

I was saddened to hear of Carolyn's death, and only recently, through the U of M alumni magazine, as I have lived here in Montreal since 1967 and lost most of my connections with Winnipeg. When we were in fourth and fifth year honours English at St John's College, Carolyn and I were often the only ones in our class, and alternated giving one another weekly presentations on the great novels, plays and poetry. What a gift that was, to have such close attention from our professors as we shared the excitement of discovery. We lost touch for many years but renewed our acquaintance about 15 years ago. A lovely person, with a wry sense of humour and great sensitivity. My deepest sympathies go to her family. - Posted by: Barbara Black (Fellow student, 1959-64) on: May 13, 2015

Carolyn was one of the finest English Professors I have had the privilege to know. She caught my attention in a first year English class at U. of W. in 1968 when I was a first year Arts student and fired what has been a life long passion for teaching English, and a love of English poetry, prose, composition, and writing which continues to this day. I was fortunate to renew her acquaintance while I taught at the Collegiate of the U Of W. from 1972-1984. Carolyn was a very "cool" teacher and person as well. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Judy (Bill) Bauereiss (student and friend) on: Jan 15, 2015

I always felt soul connected to Carolyn when we were girls and later in life when we met for lunches with other ladies we went to school with - What a shock to lose such a vibrant, lovely mensch. Carolyn was helpful with my poetry writing when I asked her for her opinion. She was encouraging and always supportive. She'll be sadly missed. My sincere condolences to her siblings, their families and all her friends. I know she felt close to her family. We all feel the loss. - Posted by: Sandi Shaffer Bloomfield (Friend since elementary school.) on: Jan 13, 2015

Carolyn was one of the finest teachers I ever had: I say teacher, not prof, because I am comparing her to teachers I had throughout my life. Her insights into and passion for Shakespeare changed my life, exponentially increasing my love and appreciation of Shakespeare. I went on to become a classically trained actor, and now teach Shakespeare to teen and adults; her influence is still with me. I stayed in touch with her from time to time over the years, and will always remember her keen wit and wonderful warmth. Personally and professionally, she will be missed. My condolences to her family. - Posted by: Mariam Bernstein (Former Student) on: Jan 13, 2015
