BERNARD EDWARD MCGOWAN October 20, 1931 - January 13, 2015 Peacefully, surrounded with the love of his family, Bernard passed away on January 13, 2015 at his home. Leaving to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 55 years, Lily, his son Bill, daughter-in-law Yolanda, grandchildren Amanda (Dale), Joshua, Jordan, and Joel. His sisters Shirley, Jessie (Howard), Vivian (Jim), Mildred (Larry), and many nieces and nephews. Bernard was predeceased by his parents Edward and Iva McGowan. His brothers Bruce and Brian; brothers-in-law Dennis and Willie; and sister-in-law Donna. Bernard was born March 20, 1931 in Cartwright, MB, where he grew up and attended school. After completing his schooling he moved to Winnipeg and obtained his refrigeration journeyman certification. On October 10, 1959, Bernard married the love of his life Lily (Melnichuk) and they resided in Winnipeg. In 1964, Bernard joined Agriculture Canada as an Agriculture Inspector and worked there as a supervisor until his retirement in 1991. Bernard and Lily worked hard to achieve their goal of raising a family. They welcomed their son Bill Bernard on March 26, 1966. In 1973 Bernard and his family moved to Birds Hill where they had built their family home and reside to this day. Bernard enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Time spent with his family, together with Lily, admiring their grandchildren and their accomplishments, the cabin at Rock Lake, fishing, bonfires under the stars (always with marshmallows), watching the game on TV, a good meal, and the beauty and simplicity of God's creations. Bernard was a long time member of the Gordon-King Memorial United Church and enjoyed time spent with friends at Bible study. Bernard was a gentleman, never spoke harshly of anyone, always thought before he spoke and always saw the silver lining on each cloud. He was devoted to his family and to his faith. Dad's wish was to come home; the family wishes to thank the Palliative Home Care Department for their care and support over the last few months. With special thanks to main caregivers Janine and Melissa and Nurse Ann. Thank you for helping bring dad home to us, where he was able to enjoy the comforts of home and family. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with viewing at 1:30 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Love you forever Bernard, you are always with us Dad. We love you Grampy. Forever Loved, Forever Remembered. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cardiac Research Department at St. Boniface Hospital, 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6.
