While miles separated us (I live in Ontario, George in Manitoba) the bond of family and kinship was never distant. It is with such fond memories and gratitude that I recall George calling me on the occasion of the death of my siblings (5 siblings in a relatively short span of years) and offering such kind words of condolence and reminiscing about happy memories of a times long past. George was much closer in age to my siblings than I so shared with me family reunions and anecdotes that predated me. How I cherished those calls and the things he shared. George was a man of compassion, kindness and humour. He was a blessing! Ellen Rehan (nee Wiebe) George's mother, Neta, and my mother, Katherine, were sisters and best friends. - Posted by: Ellen Rehan (cousin) on: Feb 18, 2015

I learned of George's passing in the traditional Winnipeg way; the grapevine. Wpger's know what I mean. I'm 60 now but met George when he was "Mr Wiebe" and I was a teenage kid. We never called him George but Mr. Wiebe, out of respect and obvious age difference. But he was our friend. We'd invade their place on Hawthorne. Play records at loud volumes. Smoke cigarettes endlessly. Talk well into the night. Hard to believe Mr. Wiebe would sometimes join us. We had no money so we rolled our own cigarettes. Mr. Wiebe would too. He was a gracious and generous man. And giving. I wish I hadn't missed the funeral but would like to express my greatest sympathy to the family: Mrs. Wiebe (who we don't call Helene), Darlene (a.k.a. Gloria), Valerie and Howard, so sorry for your loss. Ed Friesen and Aaron Janzen - Posted by: Ed Friesen (friend) on: Feb 02, 2015

I got to know George growing up as part of his church family. My earliest memories of him were through his activity with the Christian Service Brigade working he bbq and feeding us burgers. A decade later we sang together in choir, which was a wonderful cross generational bonding experience for me. I like to imagine George singing with the angels and complaining about the wholly unnecessary 16th note bass runs. Just sing it George. - Posted by: Kurt Jansen (friend and choir buddy) on: Jan 23, 2015

It is with great sadness that my husband Ron and I acknowledge the passing of our friend, George Wiebe. It was fate that brought us together as neighbors at the lake and a blessing for us that a friendship developed. George was a man of integrity and a hard work ethic probably much to the chagrin of his family. It was hard to keep him from repairing the roof or moving downed trees. He was an avid fisherman who offered up advice and actual fish to help me reign in the 'big' one for my annual fishing derby. He shared many interests with Ron and we have the bear skull to prove it! Welcoming arms and sympathetic advice is the spirit of George and his family. Together he and Helene have raised a compassionate and caring family which speaks to the goodness of them as a couple. We will miss you George and know that as I sit at the end of the dock with a fishing rod in hand, I will hope that you see fit to nudge a fish my way.
