EVELYN LOUISE POLLOCK (nee CUSSON) On Friday, January 9, 2015, our mom, nana, great-nana, aunt, cousin and friend, Evelyn Louise Pollock, passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg. Mom was born on February 15, 1925 and spent her early years in the small western Manitoba town of Somerset. At the age of 17 she wanted to head to the big city so she moved to Winnipeg where she decided to take career training in hairdressing. She enrolled at the Marvel Beauty School and while there met and was soon smitten by a handsome and charming young man named Matt Pollock. It wasn't long before the two married and settled in the River Heights area of Winnipeg. Soon, in 1947, they were blessed with the birth of their son, Larry. Some nine years later, they were excited to welcome to their family their daughter, Careyn. Mom and Dad worked tirelessly in the hairstyling training and service sector within Manitoba. As hairstyling was in their blood , they decided to take the next step in this profession and set about to become self-employed, so they broke away from working for others and established two of their own businesses. Many Winnipeg and Brandon folks will recognize the names Tru-Art for Beauty and Pollock School of Beauty which became somewhat iconic in the beauty and cosmetology world in Manitoba, and indeed, beyond. Eventually, Mom and Dad retired and turned over the reins of the family businesses to Larry and Careyn who managed them until 2004. Family was important to Mom and she coveted every minute being with her son, daughter and their families. She was very proud of all of their accomplishments, whatever they were, and that pride was always evident. Mom lived a long and rich life. She got to see a lot over her close to 90 years of living. She loved travelling, occasional trips to the casino and her Winnipeg Jets but most of all she loved her place at Falcon Lake. This was without a doubt her favourite spot on earth. When faced with adversity or disappointment, she met these situations with determination and optimism. She was also a very philanthropic lady who helped many people and organizations quietly and without fanfare. She loved deeply and was loyal to her family to the end. This is the legacy that she has left and it is one that gives us great pride. Mom was predeceased by her husband Matt, father Phil, mother Mary, brother Fred, and sister-in-law Eileen. She leaves to both mourn her passing and celebrate her life, her son Larry (Diane), daughter Careyn (Bill), grandsons Derek (Shannon), Clayton (Andrea), Ryan (Alana), and Kevin, great-grandchildren Taylor, Camryn, Owen and Riley, aunt Edna, cousins Claire (Don), Linda, Grant (Paulette), Patsy and Doreen, nieces and nephews Bev, Don (Sandy) and Brenda (Emile). She also leaves behind a lot of very special people who touched her life in very significant ways, including, to name just a few, Rosalie, Judy, Alecia, Dorothy, Kay, Louise, Marilyn, Dolly, Cliff, Karla, Larry, Noella and Fernande. She loved and cared about all of you. Her K-9 grandkids will miss her too. Shelby, Ryder, Tessa, Mia, Milo and others always brought a smile to her face and Shelby was snuggled at her side when she passed. Finally, a tribute wouldn't be complete without thanking from the bottom of our hearts the amazing people who cared for our mom over the years. The staff at the Victoria Hospital was absolutely awesome. Each and every one of them was so professional and compassionate and delivered care that could only be provided by angels. These sentiments apply also to the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and their home care teams, the Riverview Health Centre's Geriatric Rehab and Rendezvous Units and the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service. What would we have done without you? And Dr. Mayba, Pam and Val, thank-you for the kind and professional care that you extended to our Mom. Not to be forgotten, the folks at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, through their kind and compassionate mannerisms, thoughtful nature and professional decorum helped us to grieve and celebrate with a sense of peace and confidence. We thank you all! Rest easy Mom... till we meet again. In lieu of flowers, the family would be ever so grateful if you would consider a donation in our mom's honour to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8 or the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. I was a student at the school in 1967/68. I graduated and worked for a while in their salon. Wow! My deepest condolences to the whole family. I never met your mom but did know your late father. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Helen knee Kupresak Orsanic (A student at the school 1968) on: Sep 05, 2017

Careyn and Bill, We were so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mother. For me, my memories will always be of your Mother and all of her poodles that would greet us as we passed by down to our dock every day. I always looked forward to our chats every summer as did my parents and grandparents. She was always very interested in all the family news and everyone's well being. She will be very missed. Our love goes out to you and your family. Sandra and Wayne - Posted by: Sandra and Wayne Bergen (Neighbors at Falcon Lake) on: Jan 20, 2015

I had the pleasure of meeting Careyn, Evelyn and the Pollock family many years ago when I taught at Pollock Beauty School. Where Careyn and I became instant friends. Through the years Careyn and I had a lot of lunch dates, and many included her Mom Evelyn. We all enjoyed our long lunches and getting caught up on what our kids were doing, how everyone was, and what we had planned for the future. Evelyn would beam as she would tell stories of what her grandsons were doing and of their great accomplishments. She was so... proud of you!!! She also loved to talk about the trips she was either going to go on,or had just came back from with Careyn and Bill. Another love she talked about was Falcon Lake, and how she loved going there with Careyn, Bill and the boys, and she knew how hard Careyn and Bill worked to make it a special place for her. She so loved being there surrounded by her family, and of course Shelby. I will miss those long lunches with Evelyn, and that smiling face saying, "Hey Jude, how is the Wolf". Dear Evelyn, I hope you are lunching with my Mom in Heaven. Careyn we will have a special lunch date to our dear moms when you get back. I love you dear friend! Dear Careyn, Bill, Kevin, Ryan and Allan, our Thoughts, Prayers and Love are with you all right now. Love and hugs Judy, Wolfgang and family - Posted by: Judy & Wolfgang Rolke (Friend) on: Jan 18, 2015

I am so sorry for your loss. It is a very sad time. My prayers will be with you. From our friendship that started at St. Mary's but carried on at Falcon Lake. I will always your Mom's wonderful smile and laughter as she watched us running down the dock and jumping into the lake, never seeming to get tired of it. Good memories, good times. - Posted by: Gayle (McKay) Carriere () on: Jan 17, 2015
