Date of Passing: Jan 16, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS ERNEST FORD 1922 -2015 With love and with a deep gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Douglas Ford announces his passing at 92 years on Friday, January 16, 2015. He leaves the love of his life, wife Vera Ford, daughters, Kathy Rusnak (Dale), and Maggie Ford (Gerald Chartier), granddaughter, Meagan Rusnak (Eddie Bardana), grandson, Garrett Rusnak, and sister-in-law, Jo Robinson. Dad was the last surviving child of six children born to Henry and Pearl Ford. Dad spent his childhood in Winnipeg and at 19 years of age joined the Canadian Armed Forces where he served in Europe in the Second World War. Upon returning home to Winnipeg, he married Vera Asker and for 67 years had what some may call a fairy tale marriage. Dad worked at Stony Mountain Penitentiary where he was involved in many committees, clubs, and most importantly, headed the union where he passionately fought for the rights of peace officers in Canada. Once he retired he was fortunate to be able to call Arizona his winter home for over 25 years, and in the summer months enjoyed living at the home that he and Mom built in Grand Marais, MB. He proceeded on to what he called his "golden years". He pursued his hobbies of building, playing golf, and learning how to use the computer, eventually becoming the computer club president. Dad was the consummate gentleman, and will be deeply missed for his love of life, sensitivity, sense of humour, and most of all his stories. When describing his life Dad would say, "I am very pleased". We would like to thank the Health Care Teams at the Misericordia HC and at the Maples Personal Care Home. You cared for Dad and our family with compassion and love and we are eternally grateful to you, our heroes! In lieu of flowers please support the Alzheimer Society in Dad's name. http://www.alzheimer.mb.ca/ or 204-943-6622. Memorial service will be held at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. I just learned of Doug's passing as we were down south for the winter. I always remember Doug as a man with a great sense of humour who enjoyed a good laugh. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Doug was always on an even keel and never got overly excited when things didn't go exactly as planned. I enjoyed working with and for Doug many years ago and he was one of my favorite supervisors. I had a lot of respect for Doug and still do. A life well lived! May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences to the Ford family. - Posted by: Ken Thomson (co-worker) on: Apr 19, 2015

Kathy, Dale and family. We were very sad to hear about the loss of your dad. We have many memories of Doug as we always stopped for a chat on the street or met him at the store. We know that your mom and dad loved their home down south and we always heard lots about it when they were back in Grand Marais for the Summer months. Please give our best regards to Vera and know our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. - Posted by: Marlene and walter Swickis (Neighbour) on: Jan 24, 2015

Doug was a great guy. He was always there when you needed him or to talk to. always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. A gentleman like Doug was a breath of fresh air in the environment that we worked in. Thanks for all the advice over the years. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Doug Zawada (co-worker) on: Jan 22, 2015
