Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryABE J. DICK After 92 years, Abe J. Dick passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2015 surrounded by his family. Abe was well known for his meticulous attention to detail and love of mathematics, and it is fitting that his last moments were spent calculating numbers at his desk. He was born to John and Liese Dick in Lichtfelde, Russia, November 3, 1922, emigrating to Canada in 1924. He grew up in Coaldale, AB with his parents and 12 siblings. The family was very poor, however they counted their blessings that they had each other, freedom, their extended family, and church. Family and his beloved wife of 61 years, Hilda, were the most important focus of his life. He will be lovingly remembered by Hilda, his four children and their families, sons, Rick (Debbie), Meredith, Nigel, Fiona; Ron, Kellen (Jodi), Jamison (Paulina), Mary Ellen Baerg, daughters Ingrid (Reynold Martens), Nelson, Reid; Val Slobodian, Brittany, Corey, and great- grandchild Nevaeh. He will be missed by his sisters Louise and Hilda, brothers John, Walter, Jake, Dave, Alf and their families. Abe was a Mennonite pacifist who registered as a conscientious objector during the Second World War, working at CO camps in Alberta. Abe moved to Winnipeg to complete high school and was the very first graduate of Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in 1947. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts in 1950, and a Diploma in Education in 1951, and taught Mathematics at several schools in Winnipeg, ending his 30 plus year career at Churchill High School. He loved Mennonite history, and books on a variety of topics. Music was a joy for him and he played the violin, and sang in choirs for many years. Abe was a self taught builder, electrician, and plumber, designing and building many projects. He served as chairman of the McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren church building committee and Abe and Hilda served as deacons at North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church and at McIvor Mennonite Brethren Church for 22 years. Abe was the secretary of the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren church council for 20 years, the Statistician for North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren and McIvor Mennonite Brethren churches until computers replaced him, and Secretary of the Mennonite Brethren Conference for five years. As a deeply spiritual man of unfailing integrity, he was the solid foundation of his family, and we were so blessed to have him in our lives. In his last five years, he was privileged to have the best home care givers in Eleanor and Shelley whom he loved dearly. Thanks to Dr. Carl Duerksen for his excellent and kind care. Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 10:30 a.m at McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 McIvor Avenue. Viewing at Friends Funeral Service on Thursday, January 22, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee Canada.

I am thankful to God who gave Abe Dick his years of live. It is a great loss because of his talents and skills which he contributed in the schools and the church of God and different other organizations. However; his contribution will be remembered because he has made a history. My condolences to the family and in particular my dear mother in Christ Alfreda Dick who is a great help to our children in Sudanese Fellowship. May his soul rise in peace. - Posted by: Joseph Lako (Mennonite member ) on: Jan 21, 2015

Mr. Dick was my high school teacher (Churchill) many years ago--must have been one of his first years. He was very enthusiastic and most helpful to this slow-at-math student. I think of him often. - Posted by: Joan monson(fisher) () on: Jan 21, 2015
