OLGA HELEN SZUMIK August 23, 1951 - January 18, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Olga at Seven Oaks Hospital. Olga leaves to mourn mother Antonina; sister Donna (Ted) and niece Marissa. As well she was a niece, cousin, godmother, teacher and friend to many. She was predeceased by her father Mikolaj. Olga worked at Manitoba Telephone System (High School summers), The Manitoba Youth Centre (University years) and as a teacher. Her first year was spent with the Evergreen School Division then with the Winnipeg School Division #1 for almost 40 years. Olga did not have children but every student she taught she considered her own. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Seven Oaks Hospital Emergency Department, especially those on the 5th Floor, Unit 1, who made sure she was comfortable during her final days. Prayers will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 23 at 1:00 p.m. also at the Chapel with Very Rev. Archpriest Michael Skrumeda officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 820 Burrows Avenue or the Children's Heritage Fund-Winnipeg School Division. Prayers will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 23 at 1:00 p.m. also at the Chapel Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery.   • I am truly saddened with the passing of a genuine caring soul. My deepest condolences to her family. I first met Ms. Szumik at General Wolfe School, she was such a loving, caring teacher. Her door was always open for anyone at any time. Later her and I had gone for coffee a few times to just touch base and catch up. I last saw her outside of Hugh John School where we chatted for about 30 minutes or so. Olga truly cared about everyone who crossed her path.   • Miss Szumik was a great counselor, she helped me in so many ways. She was a fun yet very loveable person that cared for everyone that walked through her door.   • Ms. Szumik was my home room teacher my first year in junior high at General Wolfe. She helped me through some difficult times personally and was always there to listen. She always kept in touch with me and we later became friends and would meet for coffee or dinner. I had not seen Olga in some time, she was a wonderful person. My condolences to her family.   • I remember you when I was in junior high, I think you taught health studies. You had a very welcoming and soothing personality, I remember you had a funky style with long funky nails.   • She was my Guidance Counsellor at General Wolfe, I remember running away from home one day and I found myself at her door. She took me in Talked with me for a long time then convinced me to let her call my Parents. They came to her apt and we talked it out.   • I met her the first year she came to General Wolfe 1977-78 I think. She was the nicest guidance teacher. Always had time for anyone. As I got older my daughter had her there also.   • Ms Szumik was my teacher and counsellor at General Wolfe Junior High, (1980s) she was a very down to earth person and she had a special way of making you feel very comfortable. I will always remember that she was very accepting of her students and that she took the time to build relationships with them. She was loved and respected all students.   • I first met Ms. Szumik in the late seventies when she was the guidance counselor at General Wolfe. She was always someone that was easy to talk to and never made you feel as though she was judging you. She knew how to support and listen to the kids in her care and I for one will never forget the help she provided me during some troublesome teenage years. I feel blessed that I just recently ran into her and had the opportunity to express my thanks. She was sincere in our meeting and even remembered my entire family, it just showed that she was genuinely interested in people.   • I first met Ms. Szumik when I was 12 years old. She was and always will be a wonderful soul. One of the most kindest and generous people I have ever met. She had a smile and a laugh that could brighten anyone's day. I am forever thankful for all that she taught me in education and in life. I will carry and use those lessons throughout my life.
