SONIA META BLASCHUK September 30, 1922 - January 21, 2015 With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Sonia Meta Blaschuk (nee Sihikal) at the age of 92 on the afternoon of January 21, 2015 at Grace Hospital. Sonia died peacefully with family by her side. Sonia was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by Leo, her husband of 54 years, in 1997 and her brother William Sihikal in 2009. Sonia is survived by her sister Terri Dickson of Burnaby, daughters Pat (Jim), Donna (Dave) and sons Edwin (Deborah) and Gary (Denise), her grandchildren Dawn, Drena, Jeff, Amy, Jocelyn, Cheri, Michelle and her great-grandchildren. Sonia was born in Slout, Ukraine in the difficult years following the Russian revolution. In 1926, like so many other Ukrainians desperate to flee the oppression, Sonia's family immigrated with very little of their family belongings. The journey ended at a homestead in the wilderness near Lizard Lake, Saskatchewan. Sonia's formative years were spent in the midst of the Great Depression which indelibly shaped her character. From a young age she knew the value of hard work and the blessing of a full garden. Sonia was always an advocate of working hard, getting a good education and doing your best in whatever you do. In need of better farm land, the family moved to the Swan River Valley in 1939. Sonia met her future husband Leo Blaschuk in Swan River and they were married in 1943. The first fifteen years of their married life were spent on a farm in Benito, Manitoba, followed by 11 years in the motel business in Swan River. In 1969 they sold the motel and moved to Winnipeg. Sonia worked at various jobs in Winnipeg as well as upgrading her education, until graduating as a nurse after the age of 50. Of the many types of work she did, Sonia loved her nursing job most of all, working full time until her retirement at age 69. After retirement, Sonia loved to spend time in her kitchen cooking, spoiling her grandkids, traveling, spending time in her yard, and was always interested in what her kids and extended family were doing with their lives. Sonia had the blessing to live a very full life and was able to live independently in her own home to her last day. A private funeral service is planned. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

  • I met Sonia through church connections while in Swan River. The whole family was very gracious to me and made me welcome in their home many times during my stay in 1969-1970. I talked to Sonia on the phone shortly after Leo's passing and enjoyed catching up on old times with her. - Posted by: Isabel (Fraser) Acheson (friend ) on: Feb 02, 2015
