JOAN ANN THORSON (nee YOUNGER) December 12, 1944 - January 22, 2015 Peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2015, with her husband Gib and family by her side, Joan passed away at home after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Joan was predeceased by her parents Florence Stacey in 2009 (stepfather "Uncle" Jack in 1997) and William Younger in 1970. Left to mourn is her husband of 40 years Gib; daughter Jamie (Shawn); brothers Bill (Shelagh), Brett (Lori); sister Kim (Wayne); stepsons Pat (Erin), Mike (Dianne); grandchildren Seth (Bridget), Caleb (Stephanie), great grandchild Blake; grandchildren Daniel and Emma; nephews Will (Jen), great nephew Shade, and nephew Lloyd; nieces Courtney (Jeff) and great niece Zoe, niece Natasha (Ian) and a baby girl on the way; nieces Caitlin (Mike) and Robynn. Joan was born in Winnipeg and spent her first 23 years in East Kildonan. She moved to Calgary where she worked at Opsco Industries for 25 years. This is where Joan met Gib and they married in 1975. After an early retirement, Joan and Gib moved to Grand Marais, MB in 1998. For over 20 years they wintered in Lake Havasu City, AZ with their many close happy hour' friends from Canada and the USA. Joan loved to cook, talk on the phone, play hand and foot', shop, relax by the pool in Havasu, grow upside down tomato plants, buy Jeanne's cakes and work at the Grand Marais Village store. As per Joan's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place in the spring. A "Joan's Day" Celebration of her life, will be held in the summer. The family would like to give special thanks to John and Debbie, as well as her many Grand Marais and Havasu friends. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I just found out that Joan was no more. So sad. I always meant to call/write to you but procrastinated. She and Gib befriended me when I arrived in Calgary. I can never forget your friendship. Love you Joan. Mintu - Posted by: Mintu Bose (Friend) on: Jul 18, 2019

  • Joan was my mom's (Carolyn Freeman) best friend and we spent most holidays and weekends with Joan and Gib when they lived in Calgary. I have so many wonderful memories of Joan, but I remember her infectious laugh most of all. Gib, our hearts go out to you, family and friends at this difficult time. "I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love." • If this is the Joan Younger who lived on Kildonan Drive, we were pals during our Junior High School Years. I lived at 675 Kildonan Drive. We played Jam Pail Curling and Joan was my Skip in a bonspiel. I still have the newspaper clippings. My parents worked full-time and I spent much of my after school hours at Joans house and remember Brett and Billy. I also remember awesome Nanaimo bars which I believe were made by Joan's mom or grandma. We had great times playing on the streets and just hanging out. I lost touch with Joan after moving to the West End of Wpg. when I started grade 9. My condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Anita McKinnon (nee Oberton) Kelowna, BC (Childhood friend) on: Jan 31, 2015
