Date of Passing: Jan 31, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIRENE (RENE) LYCAR (nee THOMAS) January 29, 1928 - January 31, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother at the age of 87 years following a long battle with Dementia. Rene was predeceased by her loving husband William (Bill), her parents William and Harriet Thomas, sisters Rhoda, Pat, Joan and Ivy, brothers Billy, Bobby and Peter. Rene is survived by her sister Betty; sister-in-law Rose Tesluk; brother-in-law Steve Lycar; along with her five children Roy (Betty) Lycar, Larry (Phyllis) Lycar, George (Colleen) Lycar, Danny Lycar, Maureen (Lorne) Haas; 11 grandchildren: Rob (Tara), Ryan (Cheryl), Melanie (Rob), Laurel, Travis, Kristen (Chad), April (Kurtis), Leanne, (Jairad), Chelsea, Andrea and Trevor; 11 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Gabriel, Elisha, Jordan, Ian, Terence, Ashton, Brook, Mackenzie, Ryder, Tenley and Leanne and Jairad's baby on the way due in March. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Rene grew up in northern England, Seaham Harbour. When she was sixteen the family moved to London. It was here Rene met Bill during the Second World War. They married shortly after the end of the war in 1946. Rene was a young bride of 17 years. After the marriage, Bill came back to Canada and Rene travelled alone from England by boat as a young war bride. She ended up in Gimli on the farm with a new family and a new culture to learn. Bill and Rene lived and worked together in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon and finally settling back on the farm in Camp Morton, Manitoba. Rene and Bill were married for 62 years. Mom loved to go camping in her younger years, fishing with Dad and the family on Hnausa dock or just sitting on the beach. She enjoyed working in the garden and looking after her flowers. Mom was a terrific cook - being a non-Ukrainian, she made the best perogies, holophci and borscht. Rene resided the last six years of her life at the Betel Personal Care Home in Gimli. The family would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers for all the care and support they gave her. She was well cared for and loved by all the staff. A small family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 9Z9. Mom, you are forever in our hearts. We met Rene when we all worked together at Lakeside Camp in Gimli. She was a hard worker and a real "lady" with whom we enjoyed many laughs. Larry and his family lived across the highway from us. Our sympathies go out to all the family. Garry & Isabel Peterson - Posted by: Isabel Peterson (Friend and CoWorker) on: Feb 11, 2015

Our condolences to all the family and friends and to the Betel staff what would have grown fond of Rene. The last time I saw Rene at Betel and spoke to her, she gave me a big smile back and said she knew me; I'm guessing she may have thought that I was my mother, Lillian, since people say I look so much like her. - Posted by: Norma (Sigurdson) and Michael Cone (family friends from Arnes) on: Feb 10, 2015

Mom, there are many fond memories of you from across Canada from Vancouver, to Toronto, to Edmonton and finally home in Camp Morton. You were always encouraging and loving to me and my family. I love you. You will be missed by Betty and I, Rob and Tara, Ryan and Cheryl and Melanie and Robert, and their families. We will all miss you greatly, Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandmother Rene! - Posted by: Roy Lycar (Eldest son, I will miss you Mom, God bless you!) on: Feb 08, 2015
