Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOAN MARGARET MERONEK (nee BRENNAN) May 22, 1922 February 18, 2015 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Margaret Meronek on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Joan was the youngest of five children born to Helen and Peter Brennan in Montreal. It was there that she was to meet and wed William "Smiley" Meronek, who died in 1999. Mom was a devoted wife to Smiley over their 57 wonderful years together. Following the loss of the love of her life, her strong faith sustained her. Throughout her life, Mom maintained an active lifestyle while raising her children fulltime. Various activities such as bridge, curling, bowling and CWL kept her involved, but golf was her passion. As a regular member of St. Charles CC, where she served one term as Ladies President, Mom made many lifelong friends. Winters were spent enjoying golf at the course on which their condo was situated in Titusville, Florida. It took a bad fall at age 84 to curtail her physical activities but not her talent for treating family and friends to a marvelous meal at a well-laid table. Remarkably, she was able to live independently until age 90. She is survived by her four children, Judy Searson, mother of Richard, Melita and Stacey; Brian Meronek, father of Shanly, Stephanie and Matthew; Maureen McLeod mother of Ben, Colleen and Joe; and Joanne Hopkin, mother of Natalie, Stephen and Scott; her five great-grandchildren and extended family, Bob, Nancy, Wayne, Tony, Blair, Tennille and Alexandra. Mom's strength of spirit in her final, very difficult, days will have a lasting and profound effect on her family. Mom, your struggle is over now: "but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." [ISAIAH 40:31 KLV] You will be missed by all who were touched by your gentle presence. The family would like to express deepest thanks to the following for tireless and compassionate care of our mother over the last two plus years: Karen (The Boulton), Riverview Geriatric Day Program Team, St. Boniface Hospital E4 staff, Seven Oaks Hospital 4 U5 staff and West Park Manor, in particular, 2 North Wing. In addition, the steady concern expressed by Mom's special friends in her last days, Marg, Merle, Shirley, Gayle, Hildy and Fred was a major support to family. Her life will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at St. John Brebeuf Parish, 1707 John Brebeuf Place at 10:30AM. My memories of your mom go back to Elm Street in Winnipeg, when Joanne and I were at Robert H. Smith. Mrs. Meronek was always such a lovely lady. In later years we spent time with Mr. and Mrs. Meronek in California with Joanne, and had a wonderful visit. Our deepest sympathy to the family. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to all of Joan's family. I have many memories of the times spent with Smiley and Joan and of her love of family and golf. One of my fondest memories was golfing with Joan and Joanne in Florida. I was always amazed at her easy golf swing, consistently straight down the fairway, onto the green and into the hole with nary a hair out of place. She outplayed us younger gals with grace and a much better score. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. - Posted by: Joanne King (Close family friend since 1940.) on: Feb 24, 2015

I had the honour of meeting Mrs. Meronek on only a few private occasions. I was struck each time by her gracious elegance, her welcoming but reserved manner. She presented as a woman whose intelligence was crystallized on meeting her and whose devotion to family all encompassing. Through her daughter Maureen I heard many amusing and inspiring tales of her deep spirituality, love of life and her tenacious loyalty to her husband, children and grandchildren. Most importantly I learned her love was reciprocated and her values assimilated. She has made a difference and can now rest. - Posted by: Catherine Dunn () on: Feb 22, 2015
