JACOB (JACK) BOUMA It is with great sadness that the family of Jacob (Jack) Bouma announces his passing on March 18, 2015 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born in Andijk, The Netherlands on July 18, 1932. He was predeceased by his parents Henk and Iem Bouma, and his younger brother John. Jack will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Donna (Parrott), his three daughters, Dianna (Maurice) Berard, Sandra (Wayne) Bergen, and Linda (Boomer) McLaughlin all of Winnipeg; granddaughters Teresa (Joey), Danielle (Kyle), Jennifer (Jeff), and Katheryn (Darren); three precious great-grandchildren Teagan, Lily, and newborn William Jack who was able to meet his great-grandpa just days ago. Also left to remember him are his younger sister Henny (Stu) Fleck of Winnipeg, his sister-in-law Joyce Schmidt (Parrott) of Nanaimo, BC, and his favourite cousin Willy in The Netherlands, as well as several nieces and nephews. Thomas, the granddog, will miss all the special scratches and dog treats that were always in abundance when Jack was around. Jack was raised and educated in Andijk until his family immigrated to Canada in 1951. The family landed in Carman, Manitoba, working on the Strachan Farm for two years. They then moved to Elm Creek where they ran the Elm Creek Locker Plant. In 1955 they moved to Manitou where they bought the Manitou Frozen Foods Centre. While in Carman, he met Donna and they were married there in July 1956. They moved to Winnipeg where Jack worked as an accountant with Federated Co-operative and later moved to Red River Co-operative as office manager. In 1966 he began his career with the Manitoba Government in the Department of Co-operative Development until his retirement in 1988. He specialized in incorporating and supporting a variety of co-operatives, especially in northern Manitoba with fishing and housing. After his retirement Jack continued working with co-operatives right up until this year and enjoyed it very much. During these years he met many people who have remained lifelong friends. He especially enjoyed his Tuesday luncheons with the senior Co-op group. Jack treasured his friendship and working relationship with his business partner Harry Skene and his wife Cecile that continued to this day. Jack was very proud of Donna's career as a teacher in the St. Vital School Division, and her great accomplishments as a singer with Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, St. Stephen's Broadway United Church, James Duncan Choir, Hollow Mug, Winnipeg Singers, Rainbow Stage, Winnipeg Philharmonic and the CBC. He was thrilled when she won The Rose Bowl at the Winnipeg Music Festival in 1958. Jack and Donna traveled extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Europe, enjoying many winters in Hawaii. They also hosted many cousins traveling from The Netherlands, England and Australia. Every summer they enjoyed the family gatherings at their cottage at Falcon Lake. Special thanks to the wonderful friends on Moore Avenue, where Jack and Donna lived for 55 years, for all your love and support, especially Jan and Marge. You all went above and beyond! There are no words to describe how grateful we are to the nurses, staff and coordinators of Palliative Care Manitoba and Poseidon Care Centre who enabled Dad to spend his last few days with Mom at his side. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date as per Jack's wishes. Doyle's Funeral Chapels of Carman in care of arrangements.

  • Dear Dad, There isn't a day goes by that I don't think about you and how much you are missed. Please know that we are all doing fine and mom is doing great! You would be so proud of her, she is a remarkable woman, but you know that so well. Can't believe it's been 2 years since you left us, your next adventure began. Lots of love and hugs to the moon and back Dad..... love and miss you but know you are in our hearts forever. Dianna - Posted by: Dianna (Daughter) on: Mar 18, 2017

  • Please accept our condolences at the passing of Jack. Although we didn’t keep in touch in our later years I have fond memories in the early years. I remember the Bouma family leaving Holland in 1951. Our family immigrated in 1952 where the Bouma’s took us in. Tante Iem, Oom Henk, Jack, John and Henny helped us settle in our new life. I remember the family visits to Elm Creek and later to Manitou. We had moved to Winnipeg later but we all still visited back and forth. When we got married in 1967 Jack and Donna came down for the wedding. Donna was our soloist. We were all so proud of her as she was on the CBC “Singalong” program and we watched it every week. When my brother passed away Jack phoned me to offer his condolences. We had a nice visit. He gave me some tips on retirement and we said that we should keep in touch and how I wished we would have. He will be fondly remembered and will be missed. Henk and Beverley Kats Saskatoon, Sask. - Posted by: Henk Kats (Cousin) on: Mar 24, 2015

  • We met Jack when we were first starting up our fish co-op. Jack and Harry used to come out to Lundar to pick up the books for the audit. He always had stories to tell of his travels. Had not seen him for a few years and did not know his family, but our condolences to them. - Posted by: Norman and Donna Kirby (friends) on: Mar 24, 2015

  • We have many fond memories of Jack from Falcon Lake. He was an energetic fellow who always had something on the go. We remember the days when he was out sailing in his sail boat. We also remember one time when a wire was loose on our 30 foot antenna mast and we told him about it in passing. The next thing we knew he had climbed the tower (well in to his 50's at the time) to fix it. He was a great man who lived a great life. God bless. - Posted by: Bill & Careyn Head (Former Neighbours From Falcon Lake) on: Mar 23, 2015

  • My deepest sympathy to Donna, Linda, Dianna, Sandra and family. Jack was more than just a neighbour he was family. We are so thankful to have lived beside him all these years and we will miss him more than words can express. - Posted by: Jan (Friend) on: Mar 21, 2015

  • Grandpa, I'm so glad we got a chance to see each other once more before you passed. It was my extreme pleasure to introduce you to your first great-grandson that will live on as your name sake. Our family has lost its patriarch and will never be the same... your presence will be sorely missed. I take comfort in knowing you're in heaven now looking down on all of your girls and your first little boy. All my love... Jenn - Posted by: Jennifer Martens (Granddaughter ) on: Mar 21, 2015

  • I would like to send my sincere condolences to Donna, and all of Jacks' family. I have had the pleasure of working with Jack for the past 18 years. I always enjoyed his visits to the Island to do the audit on our books. In the last few years we were able to do things via the internet so I didn't get to see him very often but still talked to him on the phone. There is an emptiness I feel now that he is no longer with us. His spirit will live on through his memories I am sure you will all cherish. God Bless you all. - Posted by: Cyndi Devaney (Auditor for the Matheson Island Marketing Co-op Ltd.) on: Mar 21, 2015

  • Jack, along with Harry Skene performed the audit for our cooperative for several years and could always be counted on to provide me with bookkeeping advice when required. It was an annual traditional for Jack, Harry my partner, Ron and I to go out for lunch together a couple of times a year. Jack was one of the good ones.
