DURLENE VYCENIEA GERMSCHEID March 27, 1938 - March 20, 2015 With immense sadness, we announce the passing on the morning of Friday, March 20, 2015 of Durlene Germscheid - Wife, Mother, Sister and Friend. Born on March 27, 1938, Durlene moved to Winnipeg with her family in 1953 where, aside from a brief period in Churchill, MB, she would reside for the remainder of her life. The mother of five children, Durlene embraced a life-long career dedicated to aiding the impoverished and to defending the rights of those unable to do so on their own. Achievements include: volunteer for the Welfare Rights Movement (1969); founding member, and then Director of the Winnipeg Council of Self-Help (1970 to 1974); Officer of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission in 1977 - ultimately rising to the position of Executive Director of the Commission in 1983 where she remained until her retirement in 1996. Throughout her career and life, she also contributed to many local and national organizations, serving as: President of the Neighbourhood Services Centre; Chairperson of the National Council of Welfare; and Board Member for (among others) the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, the Manitoba Rent Stabilization Board, Osborne House, and the Manitoba Genealogical Association. Predeceased by her mother Violet Scott (1969) and her brother Barry Scott (2013), Durlene leaves to remember her: husband and best friend of more than four decades, Bill Young; children Michael Young (Beatrix Saltzinger) in Germany, Terrance Germscheid (Shelley), Colleen Kott (Tim) of Mission, BC, Patrick Young of warmer climes, Kenna Arnusch (Jim) of Langley, BC, stepson Keith Young of Ottawa, and by grandchildren: Kim Beaudry (Jay Burton), Nicolas Kott (Katharine), Michael Kott, Joe Arnusch (Marina), Andrea Arnusch, and Taylor, Mackenzie and William Germscheid, along with great-grandchildren: Piper, Lia, Willow, Sam, Elliot, Emerson and Chloe. So too will she be missed by her brothers and sisters: Earl Vic' Scott (Susan Irupang), Valdine Scott, Tom Scott (Lucille Cenerini), and Karen Scott-Alway (all of Winnipeg), and nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to list yet too valued to omit, and by her friend of more than 50 years, Chris Wiebe of Westbank, BC. After all the clichés (that are at the same time both apt and sadly inadequate) have been spent, what remains is this... We love you. And for what you have done to enrich each of our lives... Thank You' will never be enough. - Your Family A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to: CancerCare Manitoba or St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care. Expressions of condolence or tribute can be sent to www.nbardal.mb.ca The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the devoted and caring staff of CancerCare Manitoba and the Palliative Care Unit, 8th floor, St. Boniface Hospital for their assistance, guidance and comfort throughout this difficult time, and to Dr. Casey Woo and Dr. Nobby Woo - Thank you both for your kindness.
