WILLIAM ALMY MORRISON After a brief illness, Bill passed quietly to another plane, at Grace Hospital in the early hours on Friday, April 3, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne; his daughter Nancy (Andy), brother John (Millicent) and several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his son, Charles in 1986, parents Kenneth and Anna, brother Kenneth and sister-in-law Emma. Bill was born May 8, 1925 in Danbury, CT, USA. He spent his early years getting the basics of his education and graduated from Danbury High School. He was drafted in 1943 into Company B, Black Hawk Division and served in Europe and later in the Philippines with the Army of Occupation. Upon discharge from his service, Bill started his college life. Bill graduated from Harvard in 1950 (AB); Louisiana State in 1952 (MA). The next two years were spent doing research in village India. He was supported in this by a two year Fullbright Scholarship. Upon his return to the USA he completed his work and received his PH. D. From the University of Connecticut. Bill started teaching sociology at United College in September 1957, later the University of Winnipeg, until his retirement in 1991. He enjoyed his interactions with his many students and felt greatly rewarded to see so many succeed in their chosen fields. Bill had a lifelong love affair with trains, and as a result much of his time in retirement was spent with the Winnipeg Modular Railway group, putting on displays at various locations in Winnipeg, for the enjoyment of the young and old. He loved spending summers with his family at the cottage. Bill lived a generally quiet life with many hours spent reading and later doing word puzzles, right to the end of his long, happy and productive life. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. His ashes have been privately placed in his final resting place. In lieu of flowers, should anyone wish, you may make a donation to your favorite charity. The family wishes to thank the staff of 3 South at Grace Hospital for their excellent care of Bill during his short stay in hospital. May he rest in peace. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Dr. Morrison was my professor, mentor and friend. I was a student of Dr. Morrison from 1981 until 1983 at U of W. He was kind enough to hire me as his teaching assistant. For some reason he had more trust and confidence in myself than I did at that point in life. I went on with life and had an extremely rewarding and enjoyable career in law enforcement. In addition to my own father, Dr. Morrison was one of the major reasons I succeeded in my profession and continued my education pursuit even to this day. Would be interested in connecting with his daughter if anyone has contact with her. Sharing my comments for Dr. Morrison on this Father's day due to the special relationship we had and my high level of respect I had for this man. Rest In Peace sir. Thank you for your support. • Like my brother, I met Bill for the first time when he and I joined the Winnipeg Modular Railway Association back in 1995. He always had a lot of helpful advice to share and had a great sense of humor. I for one will miss his amusing and interesting stories. My deepest condolences and sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Arthur Pearce (Fellow model railroader) on: Apr 12, 2015

  • I got to know Bill when My brother and I joined the Winnipeg Model Railway at the Northgate mall back in 1995, and through every move from mall to mall and then to the tin lizzie car barn at 125 Higgins ave, we were true blue members, even after the group folded, we were regulars at his own house every week to run trains around and talk about anything and everything, or even helping him run trains on his computer. He was even kind enough to let my brother and I borrow the odd book from his own collection from time to time, and wasn't even phased when his book broke a spine, and said no when I offered to replace it for him. I will Never meet a man with such kindness again, I always felt he thought of me as a son or grandson because I shared his own son's name. Big condolences to his family, he will always be remembered with happy and warm thoughts. and I will always think of him and all the other members that have passed away whenever I look at my WMRA CAP. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Charles pearce (WMRA Member ) on: Apr 12, 2015

  • Professor Morrison was my favorite teacher. I once wrote a paper on the institutionalization process and although the assignment I handed in early wasn't quite what he had in mind..he still gave me an A. We once went to Headingley jail, for a part of the Police and Law Enforcement education in sociology. Going through a prison with your prof was pretty interesting..he just made you feel engaged . His somewhat blank, face always had you guessing but he told it like it was. My condolences to the family..oh and prof..it took 35 years to work with kids..so if you can hear me..a big thank you for guiding all of us with your soft approach and good nature. - Posted by: Laurie GydĂ© (Student at the university of Winnipeg 1979) on: Apr 11, 2015
