ERNEST PANKRATZ Peacefully, after a brief final illness, Ernest Pankratz passed away on April 9, 2015. Ernie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen, his daughters Catherine Enns and Ruth Taronno (Tony) and grandchildren Sandy (Gillian), Laura, Jamie (Tara), David and Christy as well as his beloved great-grandchild Oswald. He is also survived by his brothers Rudy (Justina) and Jake (Margaret), brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Elizabeth, his brother Otto, and sisters Helen and Susan. Ernie as born in Gretna, Manitoba on December 19, 1928 and grew up in southern Manitoba. He received his high school education at Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna and after a year of Normal School started teaching at the age of 18. Over the years he achieved his B.A. and B.Ed. and in 1983 retired from teaching. Ernie and Helen moved many times in his teaching career and gathered friends wherever they went. Always hospitable, their home was often the scene of impromptu get-togethers and more formal celebrations. In retirement, Ernie and Helen travelled extensively, including six Caribbean cruises and a trip to Germany. In between trips they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. Ernie loved singing and was active in the First Mennonite Church choir for many years. After retiring from the church choir, Ernie and Helen served for years with the occasional choir at the church, singing at many funerals. We will remember the pride he took in his lawn (the trick is to not cut the grass too close), the joy he took in a good steak, barbeques in the back yard, fishing trips to George Lake, and especially the love he had for his family. The family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff at Lions Manor Personal Care Centre for their compassionate and loving care over the last 4 and one half years. The 3rd floor was Ernie's home and you were his family. This became especially clear in his final days. Thank you. Memorial service will take place on Tuesday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, Notre Dame and Alverstone, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ernie's memory may be made to Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba or the Kidney Foundation of Canada. FRIENDS FUNERAL SERVICE 204-339-5555

  • Rest in eternal peace, Ernie! I worked with Ernie for one year some 40+ years ago, but that was the beginning of a friendship which we've treasured for many years since. Best wishes to Helen, Cathy, Ruth and families. - Posted by: Don and Betty Klassen (friends) on: Apr 12, 2015

  • I leave dear God to rule and reign; Who brooks and larks and wood and lea And Earth and Heaven can maintain, I’ll say he knows what’s best for me! Eichendorff's classic "Aus dem Leben eines Tauagenichts" applied to Ernie, a friend well met, like to none other. He was a good, kind, generous Mensch who ignited the good in all he met and encountered. - Posted by: Jack Thiessen (A life-long friend and fellow racanteur) on: Apr 12, 2015

  • Ernie - Mr.Pankratz was one of my math teachers many years ago. He is fondly remembered as being patient and understanding with the students. He touched the lives of many young people throughout his career. Myself and many former students from Transcona will always remember him. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. He has left a legacy in his teachings and I thank him for that. I will say thanks from all of his former students, as I know how much we all respected him. - Posted by: Danny Smith (Former student) on: Apr 11, 2015
