ANNA NIZIO Peacefully in her sleep, in the early morning of Monday April 13, 2015, Anna's soul passed into the care of the Lord at Middlechurch Personal Care Home at the age of 90 years. She was predeceased by her parents Mikolaj and Tekla (nee Chmara) Szaluk, her dear husband Jan (John) of 51 years and her older sister Mary. Her caring ways will be lovingly remembered by her son Ed and his wife Cathy, her cherished granddaughters Kate and Lexis, as well as her younger sister Celina. Anna was born on June 6, 1924 in Bobiatyn, Poland (now part of Western Ukraine). In 1940, during the Second World War, at the age of 16, Anna and her family were forcefully deported from their home by the Russians. For the next two years, they were interned in Siberian labour camps and travelled south on mostly truck transports through Central Asia and Persia, finally settling in Africa in Polish Evacuee Camps in Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe) where she continued school and took sewing classes. After the war, in 1948 they travelled to England and were sponsored into Canada by her uncle John Chmara. They settled in Manitoba where she met and married her husband John in 1949 and together they set up home in the North End of Winnipeg. For the next 40 some years, Anna worked at several sewing factories, finally retiring as a sample maker for Tan Jay International. John and Anna moved to The Maples and after their well-deserved retirement they picked copious amounts of wild blueberries and mushrooms, proudly tended their immaculate home and cherished many visits from their granddaughters. Shortly after John's passing, Anna moved to the nursing home where she had remained a welcome resident until her passing. The family would like to thank all the staff of Middlechurch Home for their exceptional care over the past 11 years. Viewing will take place on Monday April 20, 2015 after 9:30 a.m. at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church at 3597 Main Street in West St. Paul (Middlechurch), with Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Msgr. Louis McCloskey. She will then be laid to rest next to John at Glen Eden Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the on-site funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or any charity of your choice. Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 204-338-7111
