Date of Passing: Apr 16, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT (BOB) JOHN BELBAS August 18, 1943 - April 16, 2015 With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, poppa and friend, Robert Belbas, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, at St. Boniface Hospital on April 16, 2015, at the age of 71. Bob was raised in Transcona, along with his sister Patricia by John and Elizabeth Belbas. He married his high school sweetheart Geraldine on April 22, 1967. Bob joined Manitoba Hydro in 1969, which eventually led him and Gerry to set down roots in Gillam, Manitoba; where they raised their three children Leanne, Lynn and Ryan. After 34 years with Manitoba Hydro, he and Gerry moved back to Winnipeg to enjoy retirement and cottage life in Ottermere, Ontario. Bob will be greatly missed by his loving wife Gerry; children Leanne, Lynn (Rod), Ryan (Leslie); grandchildren Taylor, Brody, Tanner, Emerson, Theodor; and Auntie Vera. Along with his parents and sister, Bob is predeceased by grandchildren Chase and Cody; and beloved pets Sadie and Rufus. Bob enjoyed Rovers as a youth, many sports such as football, badminton and bowling, and watching his children and grandchildren's sports, the outdoors, photography, summer vacations out west, and animals of all kind. Bob was an active volunteer with the Gillam Lions Club, ADG Committee and Gillam Advisory Board. Many thanks to Dr. Jean Prenovault, Dr. Catherine Moltzan, and the wonderful staff of The CancerCare and Palliative units of St. Boniface Hospital. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday April 23, 2015 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice. Bob and I worked together as relatively new Manitoba Hydro employees at Laurie River and once again in Winnipeg. I remember him for his sometimes irreverent humour that I found hilarious and his kindness. Yes it was over 50 years ago but the memories stay with me. - Posted by: Glenn Suggitt (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2025

Bob was my supervisor at Radisson Converter Station many years ago. He always had a smile and was a very happy guy. He stood out for so many things, but his sense of humour is what I will definitely always remember. Rest in peace, Bob. - Posted by: Don Malinowski (Co-Worker) on: Apr 22, 2015

Condolences to Gerry and family on your loss. Bob was my supervisor at Radisson for 10 years and as such I have many memories of that time, however my fondest memories include: when Bob and I bowled on the same Thursday Night Bowling League in Gillam and surprised everyone by winning the league championship at the end of the year, and when Bob had visited me in the Gillam hospital when I had some health issues to deal with. Thanks for that Bob. Rest in peace Bob. - Posted by: Vern Wilson (co-worker) on: Apr 22, 2015

I was saddened to read about Bob's passing, but it immediately took me back to the late 50's when my father, Len Hargrave was leader of our troop. I remember the fun times we had at the summer camps in Malachi. My father, who passed away ten years ago often recalled stories involving Bob Belbas, Louis Reeves, Ken Cox, and Earl Cowan. Bob was only about 1.5 yrs older than me but he was both a mentor and a friend. I always felt that if he hadn't moved north we would have remained friends. - Posted by: Alan Hargrave (friend from Transcona boy scout days) on: Apr 22, 2015

I was deeply saddened by the news of Bob's passing. My heart felt condolences to you and your family. I had worked with Bob at the Radisson Station here in Gillam during his pre-retirement stage. He was a humorous person and liked to laugh. I still have the plant he left me, now I will have memories of him when I look at it. Rest in peace Bob. - Posted by: Val Beardy (X Co-worker) on: Apr 21, 2015

On some of my many trips up north to work on various projects, I had the pleasure of meeting Bob. Although we did not work for the same Divisions, he was always more than willing to help us out of a tight spot for equipment and such. I really appreciated his assistance with those logistical problems. Rest in Peace Bob. - Posted by: Bob Crawley (Co worker) on: Apr 21, 2015
