Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I remember when The Braun family moved to Kenton and Velda started school in Kenton in the same grade as me. Her older brother Ron was the same age as my older brother Jack and her younger sister Betty Lou was the same age as my younger brother Bill. So most of the Braun family was connected in school with most of the Roseveare family. Clarence and my Dad John thought they recognized each other somehow and got talking a while after the Braun family relocated to Kenton. They come to realize that while serving in the Canadian army in World War Two in Europe they had met when my Dad's unit was stopped briefly and doing some maintenance when they had the chance. While servicing the track on either a tank or self propelled artillery piece my Dad got something in his eye and had rotted to a medic who decided Dad should go to a field hospital for an eye flush. Clarence happened to be nearby and said he was going to the area of the hospital to get back to his own unit after running an errand so he took Dad to the hospital. That was 1944 and years later they end up living in the same town. Clarence had the nickname Brownie. It was well known in the Kenton area that Brownie was the undisputed king of practical jokes and funny stories. Always a smile on his face and a michevious twinkle in his eye no one knew what he would say or do next. Ron and Jack ended up being room mates in Winnipeg after high school. Velda had met Bill Espey when she was in high school and the both of them ended up in Winnipeg too. Bill ended up being the third room mate with Jack and Ron. Then I became the fourth after high school. Velda was in the same apartment building with a room mate on a different floor than us. There were others from Kenton also in that building and between us all we had lots of good times and great parties. Then twenty years go by and my wife and I move to Saskatoon where Bill and Velda, long since married also live. We end up in the same area and our kids end up in the same high school. We often seen Bill at hockey functions where he was a zone commissioner and I was a coach. And we often seen Velda while shopping. A few years go by and Arlene works at a local mall as an optician. Meanwhile Brownie and Jossie also moved to Saskatoon and regularly walked the mall and stopped in and visited with Arlene. A few years ago Bill and Velda relocated back to Winnipeg as did Brownie and Jossie. Our hearts go out to the Braun family and both Bills. The world lost a true ray of sunshine in Brownie. He is in heaven now, with his son and daughter, pulling somebody's leg and laughing at someone's reaction to a trick he pulled. God bless him and God bless his family. - Posted by: Les and Arlene Roseveare (Family friend) on: Apr 25, 2015
