SHEILA ALISON COX Sheila passed away peacefully early on April 27, 2015 with family, surrounded with love from close and far. Sheila was born to parents Ron and Alison Cox in 1955. Left behind to celebrate her life are her husband Jim Bakken of St. Francois Xavier, Manitoba; her brother Michael Cox (Sandra) of Calgary, their children: Jennifer (Hugh), Steven (Jane) and their families; sisters Sue Lewis (Jim) and Mary Cox Millar (Bill) of Winnipeg and their children: Kristin and Ali with whom Sheila had a cherished relationship. She will also be missed by Jim's children, Shannon (Mark) and Jeff. Sheila was part of a wonderful family from across Canada who gathers every summer on a beautiful island in the Lake of the Woods where her family will best be reminded of Sheila's vigour, humour and beauty. She will be deeply missed. Sheila grew up in the community of River Heights in Winnipeg, attending Kelvin High School and the University of Manitoba. During those years Sheila excelled in sports especially speed skating and baseball. She had many life-long friends from that time: Mike Lebredt, Heather Coleman, Laureen Johnstone, Madge Johnson, Trish Bergal and Gayle Graham. Sheila worked for 38 years for the Province of Manitoba, retiring as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Administration and Finance for Family Services. Her quiet, loyal, easy and fun style made her a treasured friend and colleague. In 1998, she met her husband and soulmate Jim. Together they transitioned from government work to a life balanced by service, new friends, travel, gardening and nature. Their beautiful property in St. Francois Xavier became a sanctuary for many. They created the White Horse Escape Bed & Breakfast and operated it for 10 years as one of the finest B&Bs in Manitoba. Sheila always knew that the best place to be was in the thoughts, prayers and hearts of others. Special thanks to the Palliative Care Team of Southern Health - Doctor Woelk and Nurse Remiliard, the homecare staff and nurses from the Province of Manitoba and the ALS Clinic at Deer Lodge Hospital. Thank you as well to the ALS Society of Manitoba, 2A-1717 Dublin Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3H 0H2, for their support and wisdom. In lieu of flowers, should you wish, please support the valuable work of this organization. A celebration of Sheila's life will take place Friday, May 1, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton Street, Winnipeg. There will be a private interment at a later date. Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • About 1974 Forty-three years later, driving through Kenora in June, on my way to my younger son's graduation in Alberta, I wonder, knowing that time has brought its changes to the family I once knew, "Are they there this weekend? I hope they are well". Then, yesterday, putting in other names, searching the past, the sadness of seeing her name appear, her picture: daughter, sister, auntie, blessed companion of another's heart. And I remember Sunday afternoon dinner after church, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, Ashie and Fee, those beautiful hearts, kindness personified. Sheila, the younger sister, the skater, her smile and chuckle as she comes through the door, so proud of her new, bright yellow Celica. Michael of the acerbic humour, with a twinkle, and Sandra and the little one. Jim and Susan. I remember Susan's birthday and the love in Jim's eyes on the "day of the piano", a Yamaha as I recall, and the collective joy as she sat down to play. Mary Elizabeth of the wonderful laugh and the pure heart, and the Friday scramble to get to the lake. Passing when I shouldn't have - young then, and invincible. The precious blessing of a family gathered in love. "Liberating" logs for the stoves on a sunny afternoon. Badminton on the court - everyone playing. Family projects. The quiet contemplation of life well lived. Sleeping out in the porch. Loons. "There's a mouse in my bed!" The water fight started small - just water pistols we got at the grocery store near the dock - and Ronnie on top of the pump house with the hose, soaking all and sundry - no quarter given. Jim, we have never met, but I know, after knowing them all for even that short time, that you are a fortunate man. Because they are the most loving family I have ever known. - Posted by: Peter (Family friend from many years ago) on: Apr 09, 2018

  • Sheila, I have so many wonderful memories of you that bring a smile to my face. I enjoyed working with you at 114 Garry Street when we had our "original team" working with Kim Sharman. Me and Marilyn always up to no good and you would just smile and shake your head at us. I know you are looking down on us all with that wonderful smile. I was not able to pay my respects at your service as I was out of town so I wanted to leave you one last message here. God Bless you Sheila, you will be missed... Jim my condolences. - Posted by: Cathy Kolochuk (Work Friend) on: May 12, 2015

  • We were the very last people to stay at the Whitehorse B&B which was such an honour but also so sad knowing that they were shutting it down for the reasons of Sheila's declining health. Sheila was such a kind & caring person, so accepting & soft spoken every time we had the privilege to stay with her & Jim. We are so saddened to hear of her passing but trusting she is resting in the arms of Jesus. Our love & prayers to Jim & her family. - Posted by: Colin& Beth Beveridge (friends) on: Apr 29, 2015

  • Sheila was our friend who demonstrated an unassailable, "moral barometer"! She successfully coached the "Utopia Clunkers" triathlon team for 15 years and always pushed her boys to be extraordinary in our leg of the Prairie race circuit. Saturday dinners were a monthly highlight, oscillating between River Heights and Kings Park, where heated political discussions abound, with our Sheila on a "soap box" defending her position. The music would range from the Police's, "Tea in the Sahara" to Tim Buckley's cover of Cohen's, "hallelujah". To end another wonderful night. Sheila was unconditional in her devotion to family and friends, we loved her deeply and send thoughts and prayers to her close knit clan. - Posted by: Jane(Isaac) &Craig Mackie (Friends) on: Apr 29, 2015
