ELLEN SMITH (nee WALKER) Ellen Ethel Smith passed away peacefully at the age of 90, at the Victoria General Hospital, on April 29, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband George (1983), her brothers George and Eric, and sisters Mary and Edith. Ellen was born in England where she met George and moved to Winnipeg in 1947. Ellen was not only an amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother (nana), she was also a favourite auntie and friend to many people. Ellen worked as a payroll clerk until her retirement. During her retirement she volunteered at the Age and Opportunity office and spent countless hours knitting items to be donated to several charities. She loved to sing and was part of the Winnipeg Opera in the 1970s and 1980s. She continued to sing along to the radio right up until her passing. Ellen brought a lot of life and joy to everyone around her. She spent many days, and met amazing friends, at the CNIB participating in day trips and the numerous programs during the past 10 years. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her four children, Margaret (Keith), David (Jennifer), Derek, and Cheryl (Larry); six grandchildren, Kim (Ann-Marie), Shelley, Chris (Sabiha), Scott, Derek (Andrea) and Olivia; six great-grandchildren Trent, Tyler, Hunter, Keegan, Caelan and Meghan. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory her family back in England and a very large Smith family (full of nieces and nephews and their families). We would like to thank all the nurses and health care aides of 4 South of the Victoria Hospital, with a special thanks to Sonia and Pam. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either CNIB or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

  • Ellen was a client, who quickly became a treasured friend and surrogate grandmother to me and my children. There was no shortage of smiles and laughter when we got together for our weekly coffee at the book store. When Ellen couldn't convince the staff that tea was to be made in a china pot...with a cozy....we would enjoy REAL tea and scones at her house. My children had Ellen as their grandma for 9 years before we moved away. She continued to call and send birthday and Xmas cards to all of us. Now full grown, the children credit Ellen with teaching them proper manners...English style! I reminded them that Ellen was a dear friend and not really their grandmother. They would hear nothing of it and told me Ellen would scold me for saying such a thing. They are right....she would give it too me! We have many fond memories of our time together with Ellen. It is not with sadness that we will miss her, but overwhelming joy to have had the priviledge of having Ellen be part of our lives. We are forever grateful to her family for sharing her with us all these years. Thank you Ellen for teaching us life is fun at any age!
