GERT GALMINAS It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gert Galminas on May 1, 2015. She leaves behind her daughters Kris McRae (Duncan) and Brenda Galminas; her brother John Bimshas; grandchildren Cameron, Colin and Brock, and great-grandchildren Anna, Mack and Mira. She was predeceased by her husband Peter in 2001. Born in Lithuania Gert came to Canada at the age of 19, escaping the war and making her life in Winnipeg. Gert worked hard all her life. In 1946 she worked as a kindergarten teacher in a Lithuanian Displaced Persons Community. In Winnipeg she was employed at Ogilvie Oats. In those days you weren't allowed to work there if you were pregnant, so Mom hid her pregnancy under a big coat until she had enough money to buy a washing machine. She had a 25 year career working as a juvenile counsellor at Seven Oaks Centre for Youth (formerly The Manitoba Home for Girls). Mom was creative all her life and on retirement she took up painting, creating beautiful art, experimenting with several mediums. Mom loved to travel. Her last trip was back to Lithuania with her brother John. They travelled around the country and were able to see the house they grew up in. She loved fashion and accessorizing. Mom was strong, kind, wise, generous, funny and known to always speak her mind. She was friendly with everyone she met and enjoyed getting to know people. She and Peter built a home in Rivercrest and later a cottage near Grand Beach. They loved to garden, swim and spend time with their family. We would like to acknowledge the residents and visitors she got to know at Charleswood. We would also like to thank the staff at Charleswood Care Centre, many who had a close relationship with her. Also thank you to Dr. Harris and the very caring staff at Concordia Hospital. Services will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, with refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Sorry for the loss of your Mother Brenda. While I never met her, the words you spoke of her were always warm and kind, like she was. My thoughts are with you and Brock. Take care my friend. - Posted by: Karen Peters (Friend of Brenda) on: May 13, 2015

I am sorry to hear of your Mother's passing and even more sorry I just found out today so could not make the service but my thoughts and prayers are with you today. I had the pleasure of knowing "Gert" as we all knew her as Seven Oaks Youth Center as well as her daughter Brenda who also worked at the Youth Centre. - Posted by: karen edmonds () on: May 09, 2015
