REGINALD HUGHES Peacefully in his sleep, Reg passed away on Monday, May 4, 2015 at the age of 97. Left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Jeff (Irene), David (Kleo), Dan (Terine), Lisa (Chris), great-grandchildren Kaethe, Nik, Karl, Marina, Andreas, Camryn, Brooke, Marli and Avery, daughter-in-law Diane and special niece Joanne Prosolowski (Tony). Reg was predeceased by his wife of 73 years Rena, his son Art, his daughter-in-law Pat, his parents and his siblings Edna and Jack. He is survived by sisters Irene Birkett, Joan Hopkins, Betty Doroschuk (Eugene), Sheila Keenie (Terry) and brother Doug (Dorene). Reg was born in Winnipeg on June 30, 1917 the first of eight children born to Reg and Mabel Hughes. As a teenager he left school early to help support the family. He married his wife Rena in 1939 and served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War in Calgary and Halifax. When Reg and Rena returned to Winnipeg with their son Art after the war, Reg started working at CPR, where he remained until his retirement in 1977. Retirement was filled with traveling, golfing, curling, playing cribbage and socializing with friends and spending time with family. Reg was a good, kind man and a lover of life. Special thanks to the staff of Lions Personal Care for their compassion and care for Reg during the past five years and especially in these last few months. Private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • As a funeral was not held for Reg I want to take this opportunity to say goodbye to our big brother Reg from all of his siblings and spouses living and deceased being Irene (Garnet), Edna (Jim and Floyd), Jack (Jean), Joan (Billy aka Hoppy), Doug (Dorene), Betty (Eugene), and Sheila (Terry). As Reg almost made it to age 98 volumes could be written of the history of Reg and our family. Reg had a very happy life with wife Rena and his beloved son Art until Art's untimely passing. Reg's last few years were difficult for him and although we will all miss him very much we are grateful he has passed into a better place. Dorene and I are also very grateful we were fortunate to see Reg shortly before his passing and have a great visit, and although we weren't aware of it at the time, to say our last goodbyes. Rest well, Reg, we all love you. - Posted by: Doug Hughes (brother) on: May 20, 2015

  • I have so many great memories over the years of my Uncle Reg and Aunt Rena. He was always so easy to engage in a conversation whether it was about our favourite football team the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, The Brier or his days living in Calgary. When I was just a kid I often visited Reg & Rena's with my parents so I spent a lot of time with them. After high school a couple of my former classmates went to work at the CPR and worked with Reg before he retired. He loved to pull jokes and pranks on his young coworkers as they often shared with me. RIP Uncle Reg and my sincere condolences to all the Hughes family. - Posted by: Grant Hardman (Nephew) on: May 10, 2015
