MARY L. MITCHELL May 19, 1936 - May 5,2015 Many friends and students of Mary Mitchell are saddened at her death. She is survived by many whom she called family. Mary was an educator who began her career in the Ontario public system and went on to teach in northern Quebec; at Confederation College, Lakehead University and Mid Canada Bible College (Thunder Bay); and at Marmara University (Turkey). She worked as a classroom consultant and Native Language Coordinator with the Department of Indian Affairs, and helped establish the diploma program in Native Language Instruction at Lakehead University. Mary was very deeply involved in establishing a theological teaching program in Turkey, a project that was very dear to her heart. Mary had a dream of establishing a "First and All Nations" Learning Centre in the North End of Winnipeg. Toward that end, she put a great deal of time and energy into teaching Bible classes. She also served at Bethlehem Aboriginal Fellowship in Winnipeg. Mary was an earnest and ever-creative teacher who delighted in seeing her students come to maturity and personal growth. Mary's ministry went beyond the classroom. Her home was always open to those who wished to drop in for tea, talk and prayer. A Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Saint Margaret's Anglican Church, 160 Ethelbert St., Winnipeg, MB. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Mary was a great learner - that's one of the reasons why she was such a great teacher. I won't soon forget our discussions together while my kids and dog played with her two dogs. She was always interested not just in the understanding of Scripture but just as much in its application. She had a genuine humility about her. It was a humility that led her to keep learning from others despite having learned and taught for so many years. Mary finished well. She didn't retire from serving God even after 65. On the contrary, she seemed to order her life around his vision for it, and the fulfilling of that vision. I have found her life so inspiring. I will miss her. - Posted by: Roger Stoesz (worked with her at Bethlehem Aboriginal Fellowship) on: May 22, 2015

  • She was the coordinator for the NLIP program at Lakehead University, who tried very hard to bring Native language teachers within the school system and for that we thank her many efforts.. May her spirit travel well into the next world. - Posted by: shirley I williams (i was a student of hers at one time and became a friend.) on: May 19, 2015

  • Mary was a free spirit who showed me many things. She was a firm supporter, never waivered in her love for me and the children. Always saw the best in us and encouraged me often. We are grateful we were able to know her. Hopefully we were a blessing to her, as she was to us. May God bless and comfort her family and friends. We are sorry we live too far away to be able to be present at this time. - Posted by: Karen Carlson () on: May 14, 2015

  • Mary rest in peace. For the many years that we knew you no one could have asked for a better friend and neighbour. - Posted by: Ron and Geri Molinski (Neighbour) on: May 09, 2015
