It was with much sadness when I recently learned that Mr. Witt passed away four years ago. He just came to my mind about a week ago and I decided to "Google" his name to see how he was doing and was shocked to learn the news. Mr. Witt was a super nice guy and a very caring and dedicated teacher. In the spring of '74 I remember telling him that I was quitting my job at KFC and he told me about a job as a cook at Southwood Golf & Country Club and he was kind enough to drive me to my interview. Another time at his Canadian Citizenship Ceremony he invited the class to attend the Ceremony. It was great to see him at the Kildonan East Collegiate class reunion in 1996. It is just sad knowing he is no longer with us. My condolences go out to his family. - Posted by: Al Broderick (Former Student from '73 - '76) on: May 09, 2019

Mr Witt was a great coach and friend to me at my time at Kildonan East. Always upbeat and supportive. I just recently heard about his passing, my condolences to Mike Jr. and his family. - Posted by: Jason MacDonald (Student) on: Jan 04, 2017

I am shocked! I did not know! Mike and I go back to his very first days when he came to teach at KE. Even though he was "vocational" and I was "academic", we forged a close relationship and supported one another in our teaching careers. Mike was the consummate gentleman and always had a positive attitude no matter what pressures were present in the culinary arts program. He will be missed! - Posted by: Jack Boroditsky (Friend and colleague) on: Sep 28, 2015

Noreen and family, I am so sorry for your loss. It seems so unfair that you will not be able to enjoy your retirement years together. Unfortunately I am not able to be present at the funeral today, my thoughts and prayers are with you Noreen. - Posted by: Lucille Canart (Noreen's co-worker) on: May 16, 2015

In grade 10 I was falling behind in schoolwork and my parents told me I wouldn't be able to play basketball unless my grades improved. I discussed the situation with Mr. Witt and he said he had a solution. He told me he was going to pick me up from my house at 6:15 a.m. every morning and then give me a classroom where I would sit and study. For the next eight months he continued to pick me up and every morning. My grades improved and I even became the valedictorian of my graduating class. I never did get chance to properly thank Mr. Witt but I bet he would say that there is no need to thank him. - Posted by: Buck Hothi (Coached by Mr. Witt (1987)) on: May 16, 2015

I worked with Michael over the last 7 years or so - assessing English language skills and referring learners to language classes. Michael was tirelessly dedicated to helping Winnipeg's newcomers to find the resources they need to settle here and live well. With colleagues he was helpful and thoughtful and encouraging. We will very much miss his humour, his big laugh, his generous heart and spirit, and his determination (which some might call stubbornness!!). Rest, Michael. We will continue your work and keep you in our hearts. - Posted by: Debra Schweyer (Co-worker at WELARC) on: May 15, 2015

Mr. Witt. I'm so sorry that future students of Kildonan East will not have the good fortune that I had as one of his students. We had a rocky start but he is the only teacher that I can say 100% never gave up on me. He taught me to get involved and actually encouraged me to become a cheerleader, which I loved. I had and still have an incredible amount of respect for him when I graduated in 1989. What a loss for Kildonan East Collegiate. You will be deeply missed. May you rest in peace. Michael was a class act. He had a great sense of humour, which, once you understood it, was fun to be around. Mike was always so respectful of our cheerleaders who were at their basketball games, and this respect reflected who he was as a person, coach and teacher of young people. He realized the importance of team. He was taken much too soon and I am sad that I haven't seen him for a few years and didn't have an opportunity for another very interesting conversation! A piece of him will remain in many KEC hearts forever. Sincere condolences to his mourning family and friends. Rest in peace, Mr. Witt. Mr Witt was mentor and a friend to my son, not only in the Food Services department at K E but also showing him he could achieve in other areas. Over the past few years I met him on the occasion when he would be out jogging. A great man has passed but there are great memories. - Posted by: Marilyn Kalmakoff () on: May 13, 2015

My deepest condolences on the passing of your loved one. Coach Witt was my Freshman basketball coach at KE and he couldn't have been a more generous and passionate gentleman. I continued to see Coach Witt after my high school days as an official and it was a pleasure to work his games and call him a friend. Years passed without seeing Coach, but I had the pleasure of running into him last fall...which would be my last. I was so glad to see him! He was a great man with a huge heart. Rest in peace Coach. - Posted by: Cam Moskal (Former basketball player under Coach Witt) on: May 13, 2015

A fine human being who was not only a family member but one of our best friends. An educator who influenced many young lives at the River East school division....a man of principles and he died too soon in life. We will miss you Michael....... - Posted by: David & Judi (Family) on: May 11, 2015
