Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBETTY EILEEN HELGASON Peacefully with family around her, Betty Eileen Helgason, passed on at the Ste. Rose General Hospital on May 12, 2015. Betty, the daughter of Christine and Dewitt Nichols was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 27, 1928. She was raised in the Arnaud area with her three brothers Bill, Brian and Cam. She attended the Empress School two miles from home with her brother Bill and completed schooling at the convent in St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba. Her first teaching job was at Pointe du Bois, Manitoba at the age of 16, followed by a term at Mulvihill and then onto Ashern, Manitoba in 1949 where she met her true love Elmo Helgason. They married in 1950 and raised their three children Heather, Robin and Randy. Betty and Moe were happily married for 59 years. Betty was a dedicated teacher and cared equally about each and every student she taught. She was a gifted seamstress and spent many hours making clothes for her children, grandchildren, family and friends. If she wasn't sewing she was knitting. Betty was involved in 4-H, the school operettas and with Moe by her side, the Ashern Rodeo and the Ashern One-Box Hunt. Her greatest love was family and getting together for family gatherings. She is survived by her three children Heather, Robin (Bill) Finney, Randy (Millie) Helgason, her grandchildren Michael (Stacey) Penner, Stephanie (Ryan) Degrave, Tiffaney Penner (Ryan Law), Ashleigh Penner (Leland Myrvold), Leigh Finney (Darren Tindall), Leifur Finney (Sue Robson), Cody Helgason (Olivia Anderson), Shayna Helgason and Matthew Ryle and her great-grandchildren Soren Elmo Tindall, Avi Robin Tindall, Taia Del Finney, Tessa Joan Maria Finney, Samuel Brandon James Penner, Paige Olivia Drew Penner, Lucas Degrave, Stella Elizabeth Catherine Degrave, Tanner Randolph Halfstein Helgason, and her two brothers Bryan (Gwen) Nichols and Campbell Nichols. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the Ashern Legion Hall. Pastor Bill Watson to officiate. Honorary pallbearers for Betty are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Urn Bearer will be Cody Helgason. Interment will be held at a later date in the Betel (Silver Bay) Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward the care and upkeep of the Betel (Silver Bay) Cemetery Fund, in care of Carolyn Thorlacius, Box 342, Ashern, MB, ROC OEO.
