SHIRLEY ANN BROUGHTON Shirley passed away after a six month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born April 24, 1935 in Winnipeg. Daughter of Victoria "Bunty" Broughton (d. 1974) and John Broughton (d. 1986), she first lived in Bienfait, Saskatchewan in her teen years. When she returned to Winnipeg, she worked at Bond and Ronald Company (Aunt Martha's Chocolates) with sister-in-law Yvonne, and then worked for the Eaton's Mail Order until it closed. At that time, she found employment at the University of Manitoba in the Student Records Office and worked there until she retired in 2000. In her spare time, she volunteered for 15 years at the Rehabilitation Center for Children and for one year with the Winnipeg Aviation Museum. She was a curler and an enthusiastic Bombers fan, attending games as a season ticket holder with her friend Irene. She was so happy to again be rooting for the Winnipeg Jets once they returned, often betting a dollar a game with brother, Russell. She travelled across North America, Europe and Australia with B.S.Tours. Shirley will be remembered by wonderful friends such as Bev Bestland, Shirley Comber, Chris Schellenberg, Shirley Gering and her traveling companion Florence Payne. She was quiet and modest and enjoyed time at the cottage, first at Farlane, Ontario, and then at Falcon Lake, Manitoba. She leaves behind brother Russell (Yvonne), niece Glenda, nephew Jeffrey (Susan Turner) and nephew Craig (Laura) and their sons Brent and Logan. She had a quiet, generous nature and a great smile. Shirley could always be counted on for making fancy tea sandwiches to be served at special family occasions. She will be sorely missed. Her eyes have been donated to the Eye Bank and with respect to her wishes, she has been cremated. There will be no service. Thank you to the Riverview Center for their great care. I am so sorry to hear of Shirley's passing. I have very fond memories of Shirley when she worked at Student Records. She always had a smile on her face. I would also run in to her at the odd Bomber game. She was quite the fan! Another common thread we had was her niece Glenda from Brownies/Guides.. I'm so sorry for the family's loss. RIP Shirley and go Bombers go!! - Posted by: Cathy Watt (Co-worker at the University of Manitoba) on: May 20, 2015
