DOUGLAS ERNEST BRIDGE May 3, 1921 May 20, 2015 With the good fortune of enjoying a happy and fulfilling life, Doug passed away peacefully on the afternoon of May 20th, 2015 at the age of 94 years old. Doug will always be remembered by his loving wife Bert (Bertha) of 61 years, his four children, Janice and Frank (Winnipeg), Lorna and Al (Winnipeg), Warren and Anna-Marie (Bow Island), Maureen and Roman (Calgary), his 11 grandchildren Shawn (Jenny), Ally (Brad), Mark (Amanda), Kyle (Andrea), Becky (Garth), Jessica (Matt), Kevin (Kaitlyn), Aaron, Tyler, Lucas, Ethan, his seven great-grandchildren Cheyenne, Calista, Rylee, Ryan, Grayson and twins Kieran and Kellan Doug was born in Carman, Manitoba. He was raised and educated in Winnipeg, graduating from the University of Manitoba after which he spent over 30 years with the Winnipeg and St. James School Division. Doug spent his early teaching and coaching days at Gordon Bell Collegiate, Linwood, St. James Collegiate, moving on to Vice Principal at Westwood Collegiate, spending his last 18 years as Principal at John Taylor Collegiate and Silver Heights Collegiate. Doug attended John Taylor Collegiate's 50th reunion last year and was thrilled to be able to visit with many former staff and students at the event. Doug and Bert purchased the cottage at Ponemah Beach in 1959, the family spent every summer when school was out at the lake. Doug decided in the late 60's that the family needed to see other things besides the cottage, so they got a travel trailer and planned our annual summer road trip. He would get each trip mapped out with CAA triptix's, driving only so far each day so the family could enjoy the pool and other sights. We would pull into the campground in the late afternoon and then Doug would spend what seemed a lifetime trying to back up the trailer. I am sure the chants from inside the Station Wagon still resonate with him to this day...get a "pull through campsite" this time. Doug was an avid sports enthusiast. They were Jets season ticket holders in the WHA days and he followed the Jets and Bombers until his passing. Never an early morning riser, he would never miss his daily 7:00 a.m. tee time in retirement and often returned for another late afternoon of 9 holes. Doug retired in 1982 and spent over 30 years enjoying golfing, curling, gardening, biking and travelling. Doug loved to hang out with family and friends, jamming or listening to music. He loved to play cards or crib with the kids and later the grandkids. At the end of each busy day he capped it off with a glass of coke (no ice) and some cheezies. Doug and Bert never sat still their calendar was always full. The family would like to thank all the staff and Doug and Bert's friends at Devonshire House for your kindness and friendship over the past few years. Respecting Doug's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held to celebrate Doug's life. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. CHAPEL LAWN www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you all during this time. Xo - Posted by: Pam McLeod (Friend of Maureen and Lorna) on: May 28, 2015

  • Sorry for the family's loss. Doug was an inspirational man who I was fortunate to meet at a very young age close to 50 years ago. I grew up on a neighboring street and be-friended his kids. As a school principal, the position was intimidating to a young boy, but in no time his kindness and genuine interest in people was evident. He always expressed an interest in what I was up to over the years. It was great catching up with him during my Mom's 80th birthday 4 years back. I enjoyed his company when our paths would cross and enjoyed beating him at golf! He will be remembered fondly. - Posted by: Scott Allan (friend of family) on: May 27, 2015

  • Mr. Bridge was a wonderful man, a great leader, soft spoken and caring as the Principal of John Taylor Collegiate. He always had a moment to chat if you wished to speak to him. He certainly made a positive footprint in my life and I remember him fondly. My condolences to his family and please know that we all can take solace in the wonderful memories of this gentle teacher. - Posted by: Corrine (Davies) Blackmore (Student) on: May 25, 2015

  • Mr. Bridge was my Chemistry teacher at Westwood Collegiate in the early sixties. He was given the nickname "The White Knight" because he always wore a white lab coat during school hours. I don't think any student would have shared that information with him face to face! He was an inspirational teacher and one of those teachers you remember for a lifetime. - Posted by: Richard Long (Student) on: May 25, 2015
