Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDER RUSSELL (SANDY) TENNANT Born December 21, 1914 - Died May 31, 2015 Sandy Tennant, married to Annetta for 72 years; Father to Gary (Gilly Heaps), Donald, and Deborah (Brian Paul); Grandfather to Zoe, Mieka, Max, Nathan, Jocelyn and Aislinn. Sandy was born on a Dairy farm in Rosser, Manitoba, the second eldest of five children. The farm was devastated by a tornado, which levelled the house but miraculously took no lives, as well as two fires which ultimately destroyed the business. Sandy had to leave school at age 13 to support his family. His early jobs included grocery delivery on a bicycle, driving a horse-drawn milk wagon, and short order cook. He later earned a high school diploma at night school and remained a lifelong learner, studying conversational French and taking piano lessons into his 50's. Sandy's early work in retail groceries led to a career in sales with Jansen Produce, where he met Annetta. Like most men of his generation, he served in the Canadian Army in the Second World War, achieving the rank of Sargeant, and was about to be deployed overseas when the War ended. He resumed his career in sales with Dyson's Pickles, Kraft Foods, and Moore Business Forms, before starting his own auto parts business. Together with Annetta he built and ran Tenn-Way Auto Supply. For many years the distinctive neon sign glowed at 1236 Portage Avenue. Sandy was known for always being available to open up and deliver a part. Service station owners had his home phone number and the children were taught to answer the phone as an extension of the business. During his working life, Sandy was also busy with volunteer activities, including the Cub Scouts, as an Akela, and chairing Harstone Memorial United Church Building Committee. Once he retired at age 70 he increased his involvement in the community. He travelled for the Automotive Industries Association as well as acting as a small business advisor for the Business Development Corporation. In the summers Sandy and Annetta enjoyed puttering about the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach. Sandy was a longtime member of Winnipeg Presbytery, drove for the Cancer Society, was an active participant in the Scottish Rite, was a Chaplain Emeritus in the Masonic Lodge, drove a Fire Engine for the Shrine, and served on the steering committee for Fred Douglas Lodge where he and Annetta were among the original residents until a fall in 2014 after an exercise class reduced his independence. His final home was Lions Manor where he celebrated his 100th birthday in December surrounded by his family and friends. The Masons honoured him with a special birthday celebration as well. The family would like to thank the staff of Lions Manor Personal Care, Misericordia interim care, Deer Lodge, and Health Sciences for their incredible kindness over the last 18 months, as well as the Knox United Church congregation and the Fred Douglas Community where Sandy and Annetta have been so happy. Also thanks to Jeannette LaRue and Margaret Follett who generously drove Annetta to visit Sandy, and to frequent Saturday visitor and friend Fred Martyn. A memorial service will be held at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton Street, Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Knox United Building Fund or Lions Manor. Extending deepest sympathy to the Tennant Family on Sandy's passing. Thank you for sharing this wonderful tribute of a life well lived. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Tennant as a volunteer during the Society's annual daffodil sales. He leaves an incredible legacy of thoughtfulness and caring and has touched countless lives along the way. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Lovely obituary honouring a lovely man. At the same time The Sandy Tennant family was successfully running Tenn-Way Auto my Mom and Dad were running a small automotive store. In those days there was a service station on almost every corner. The service stations at the south end of the city had my parents' home phone also and would call any time of day or evening. So, thank you for the smile you gave me this morning with those great memories. Those were the days. - Posted by: Claudia Beischer () on: Jun 06, 2015

Dear Sandy, Annetta and family - I am so saddened to see your familiar and smiling face along with your life story today. You were a special member of a generation admired and respected for strong work ethics and positive societial attributes which you so successfully demonstrated throughout your lifetime. You were one of my father's favourite and best friends, which is in my book enough to mark you as a worthy human being. Also, to add a short vignette, with you as a fine businessman, I had the pleasure to buy from you on your recommendation a special "needle-fitted" grease gun necessary for my 190SL Mercedes Benz. Our families for many years enjoyed the pleasure and comfort of both being Downing Street neighbours. Rest in well deserved peace my friend. - Posted by: Harold McCort (Friend) on: Jun 06, 2015
