ELSIE SHELBY (nee JESS) 1930 - 2015 It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on June 12, 2015 at the age of 85. She was born January 17, 1930 in Leduc, Alberta to Jacob and Emma (Nieman) Jess. She had two brothers, Otto and Paul, and a sister Hilda. She spent her early years on the farm in Ponoka where she developed a love for horses and a knack for gardening. She had two daughters, Selena and Debbie. By this time she had settled in Winnipeg. Mom worked hard all her life, as a waitress and then as a bartender. In 1977 she was finally able to buy her own home and lived there till she took ill. She loved working in the yard and garden, and everyone enjoyed the fruits and vegetables from her yard. She enjoyed her soaps and having tea with her friend Esther. In September she was able to go back home to Ponoka for her sister-in-law's birthday. It was a great time for them both as they had a chance to reminisce. She was predeceased by her mother Emma and father Jacob, two brothers Otto and Paul, sister Hilda and great-granddaughter Jasmine. Left to mourn are her daughters, Selina McGregor and Debbie Strong, five grandchildren Curtis, Darla, Alyssa, Melanie and Myles, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter and Tracy. Also left to mourn is her sister-in-law Freida Jess, her stepdaughter Sandra Stiger, friend Esther and many nieces and nephews. A service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Pallbearers: Myles McGregor, Nathan Shelby, Dylan Gregg, Zane Shelby, Quinn Shelby and Braydon Strong. Honorary Pallbearers: Liam Wilson-Shelby and Kaleb Wilson-Shelby. A special thank you to the staff at the Portsmouth Retirement Center and staff on the 5th floor at the Grace Hospital.
