VERNIS BLAIR, SR. October 12, 1928 - June 7, 2015 With saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Vernis Blair, Sr. on Sunday, June 7, 2015 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Peacefully and surrounded by loved ones, he left us at the age of 87. He is survived by beloved wife, Icolyn Blair, as well as six children: son Trevor, son Aubin, son Peter (Kim), daughter Vivienne (Jim), daughter Audra, son Vernis Jr. (Maryann) and son-in-law Harold. His 15 cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren fondly called Vernis "Papa". He leaves behind many dear friends and extended family, residing around the world, particularly the many in Great Britain and in his beloved home country of Jamaica. Vernis grew up in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica and spent his adult life in both Manchester, England and the majority in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A welder by trade, Vernis was also an accomplished athlete, excelling in soccer, track and field and cricket from an early age. His enthusiasm for sports inspired many years of coaching, and an extensive knowledge of sports events and standings, both past and current. Vernis was a reputable member of the Caribbean community in Winnipeg since his arrival in the city, serving as both a founding member of the ACAM and as Mayor of Folklorama during his life. He took every opportunity to celebrate is Jamaican heritage, and instilled that passion in his family and in the community at large. A funeral service to honour our beloved Vernis will be held at Calvary Temple, 440 Hargrave St., Winnipeg, MB on Saturday, June 20, 2015. A viewing will commence at 1:30 p.m. with the service commencing at 2:00 p.m. A light lunch will follow the service directly.
