Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE FIRMIN VERSTRAETE September 13, 1916 - June 26, 2015 With great sadness we announce the passing of George Verstraete. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife, Paula (nee Becelaere), and Roger, his older brother. He is survived by his children, Joan Joyal (Ernie), Larry (Jo), Bob, Maureen Schmidt (Tom), Irene Sallee (Danny) and Janice Sheedy (Chris) as well as 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. When he was 13, Dad immigrated with his family from Torhout, West Flanders, Belgium to St. Boniface, Manitoba, an area popular with many Belgian immigrants. He met our mother, Paula, at the Belgian Sacred Heart Church where he was the choir director. They married on December 1, 1945, beginning a loving relationship that would last 66 years. A dedicated family man, Dad was unfailing in his role as provider for his growing brood. A skilled carpenter and master stairmaker, he worked at Acme Sash & Door then later for Newman Millwork. He was a meticulous craftsman with an eye for precision whose work still graces many Winnipeg homes and businesses. Resilient, optimistic and practical by nature, Dad faced life head on, looking forward rather than dwelling on the unchangeable past. He was deeply committed to his Catholic faith, unwavering in his principles, and concerned about the less fortunate. A donation in his memory to The Call of the Poor, P.O. Box 117, St. Norbert, MB R3V 1L5, will be gratefully accepted. . Funeral mass will be celebrated in the chapel on the 4th floor of Cathedrale Manor, 321 De La Cathedrale, Thursday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m. Parking is available across the street at Provencher School. Fond memories of the Verstraete family living on Deschambault go back over four décades. With the passing of your father, our family loses a very good and loyal friend of our parents, Claude and Anna. They have now passed on the torch to our generation. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Marcel and Lucie from Québec City - Posted by: Marcel and Lucie Joyal (Joan. brother-in-law) on: Jul 01, 2015

Dear Larry and Jo, I had many a lovely chat with George while visiting my parents at Manoir. He was always incredibly pleasant and unfailingly upbeat despite his many afflictions. When Josh was so ill, he was unfailing in his concern and added his prayers to our own. I was so touched that he was so outward looking and did not ever seem to dwell on his own pain and debility. What an inspiration to us all. Our sincere condolences on your loss. He will be truly missed ! Joe & Diane Scott - Posted by: Diane and Joe Scott (Friends) on: Jun 30, 2015
